Just a heads up for those about to buy the Nintendo Wii. Buy it know! The price is set to go UP!
The reason is ""Due to the severe and continuing depreciation of the pound, we are, unfortunately, having to raise our trade price to UK retailers of Wii hardware," a Nintendo UK spokesperson told MCV".
The price retailers have to pay extra has gone up by approx £16.50.
This may or may not effect larger companies but definately smaller companies.
An article can be found here; http://www.videogamer.com/news/weak_pound_forces_nintendo_to_raise_wii_trade_price.html
Thought i'd post for a head's up if it does apply.

If true this is so stupid, how long has the wii been out anyways.... Its the same with the ds, the price has hardly changed for years!
#2
That's unbelievable!!!

They've been charging us a higher rate all these years and Nintendo has always been the only console manufacturer that makes a profit and a hefty one at that and on top of the recession for a console that's been out for over 2 years without any price cuts...they're putting the price up? :-S

In my 20+ years of gaming, I've never heard of a consoles RRP increasing at any point.

The price for the DS hasn't changed at any point because of popular sales and they keep re-releasing it with minor improvements to keep it fresh and the current model is ok but they've increased the price by 50%.

Its rubbish. Things should get cheaper when tech gets older.

To be honest I dont play my wii anyway. Fed up with my xbox360 keeps breaking. Only one I am happy with is my PS3!.

Bad business decision during a recession where people are tighten up their purse strings. Instead they should have found ways to cut cost. Maybe reduce packaging or R&D cheaper components ala Microsoft Xbox 360
#7
Don't get it how they are so popular anyway,
I would take a guess that the games "seem" more child friendly if the adverts are anything to go by, so its a Wii or DS under the tree at christmas instead of 360/ps3.

happy ps3 owner
and btw sony are loosing money on each console they sell and trying to make it up on games sales, Nintendo are being greedy.

You're all forgetting the fact that by very clever marketing Nintendo has opened up all sorts of new consumer markets.
A Wii is now a must have for the slightly overweight middle aged female (and maybe male when nobody else is around).

Serious stuff the Wii, don't knock it, if it was your business and you could confidently increase the price during a recession then you'd be well chuffed !

Time will tell whether they get away with it.

hello to xbox
LOL
xboxs will be selling faster then
wiis still will be brought
#12
I don't understand it either but nintendo will get away with it.
I bought one a little after its release and it NEVER gets used at all.
I never use my 360, the only console i am satisfied with is the ps3 (not including PC's obv)
Just thought this may be of use to anyone wanting to buy one :) hope it helped

all i use my wii for is edting the system menu different colours and changing the icons
my 360 gets all the action, i dont have a ps3 but all it sems any good for is the blu ray player

I use my Wii everyday.... Well - I am a slightly overweight - not quite middle aged female housewife!

Kids love it too, and their DS. LOL we are so stereo typical.

Hangs her head in shame
#15
Most place's sell the Wii as part of a bundle, so doubt they'll be much of a change in price, if any, unless your just buying the Wii on it's own.

And even at the higher RRP these will continue to outsell the 360 & PS3 by silly numbers.

Who can blame Nintendo...........if you've got a hot seller on your hands then go with it.

It certainly wasn't meant as an insult Butterflies and the last thing you need to do (even in jest) is to hang your head in shame. ( I have one Wii Fit for each leg :w00t::p )

Ninty identified that there was a gap in the market and has gone all out to fill it and IMO done it incredibly well. Makes me smile every time when people write Ninty only makes games for kids, maybe 4/5 years ago but certainly not any more.

Out of interest Butterflies, and tell me to mind my own business if you wish, I'm assuming you have Wii Fit ? If so has it been worth your while getting it ? Are you happy with it ??

Take care :)

Don't blame nintendo.. blame our economy.

They are not the only company trying to protect their profits

Wouldn't say that's true. It's Nintendo who's being cheeky. :)

No one can deny though that for gamers who have been brought up on ninty consoles the Wii is a huge disappointment. There really is next to nothing worth buying on it :( I have one and once I had finished Mario Galaxy and got bored of Mario Kart about 9 months ago it hasn't seen the light of day. The 360 has been king in my house and I can't see any Wii games on the horizon that will challenge this, which is a shame as with a bit more power (or rather a lot more) it could have been a great console

incredible marketing that appeals to peoples lazy sides..ie get fit and lose that huge beer gut whilst playing video games, of course it doesnt work and isnt anywhere near as much fun as you first think.... but theres a constant stream of new buyers who just wanna try it... i bet the percentage of wiis sold vs the percentage actually in regular use is laughable... people seem to hold on to them rather than selling as they think better games will come out. most over rated thing in the last 10 years imo played most games on it, never gone past 5 min on one really, nowt good.

Agreed, I only play when my little one makes me play Wii sports with him! I am yet to beat him at bowling - he is only 3!

I love the Wii, I am just a casual gamer, and don't have a PS3 or Xbox360.

90% of the games are garbage, but there are some good ones, it's just finding them.
Since modding mine, I am on it everyday, before then it was only used fortnightly at most.
