Will a long HDMI lead work?

Looking to buy a long HDMI lead but wondering if anyone has any experience with them on whether they work well or not. Want to be able to transport the video from my desktop PC upstairs to the main TV in the living room.
I know I have the option to buy a repeater and that would work for sure but I don't want to spend too much as it's sort of just a passing interest.
I'm happy with a 720p resolution so nothing like the dual 1080p streams HDMI 1.4 cable can support.

Distance I need to travel is about 17m (give or take a bit) so would probably need a 20m cable.

Any idea how much the active part of the cable will help? considering it's powered by the HDMI power?

active cables should double the length upto 30m some devices don't like them due to the extra power drain
could also go this route HDMI to CAT 6
Cat6 will route better too

That ethernet option looks like the best one to be honest, but I'd have to buy two cat6 cables. It says it would work with cat5 cable but at 1/10 of the speed of cat6 how can that work?

Cat 5 can do gigabit just like cat 6 can, it's the hardware that decides the speed not the cable, cat 6 is just higher quality.

Did not know that! Thanks! I already have plenty of cat5 cables lying around so I think that's what I'll go for. Just have to shop around now to get it me for cheap.
Thanks all :)
