Will I need a Root Canal?

I had a filling done a while ago and it came out a few weeks ago, it didn't hurt when it came out and it has been liveable for over 2 weeks but now it has started to hurt and annoy me, I have heard that this could mean might need a Root Canal appointment with the dentist and I HATE GOING TO THE DENTIST.

Do you think I will need a Root Canal? Has anyone here had a Root Canal? How did it go? My drum teacher a while ago had one done and he said it hurts really bad.

Any help would be great :)

Thanks.

EDIT: BTW I know I'm an idiot by leaving it to get to this point.

trust me you couldnt hate the dentists more than me. i had to get a root canal done last year after i broke a molar and left it til it started hurting. anyway long story short it was torture up until i actually got in the dentists chair. i was really surprised at how quick and painless it was. they stick u in the gum around the tooth with a needle to numb the area which it does really affectively. then u feel nothing and its over in about 20 minutes. later in the day ull have mild discomfort maybe a lil achy feeling around the tooth in question but trust me its nowhere near as bad as u think.

A root canal is normally needed if you've had an infection in your tooth, as they remove the bad from the root and fill the root to stop further infection or an absess growing, if your filling has just come out it may be a case of having a new filling. You should only need root canal if it has become infected, but you will have to undergo a course of anti biotics first. I had an ifection and I'm having root canal next week.

Need to pay and leave a deposit for them to answer the question, and, as a student I can't afford it.

Thanks a lot for the help, rep left for the link but I'll save my money lol :-D

yep thats exactly how it went with me. i left the tooth too long and went after the pain started getting worse. they x-rayed the tooth told me i had an infection put me on a 2 week course of antibiotics then i had the root canal after the 2 weeks.

Wow, can I have your dentist?

Glad to hear it didn't hurt as much as I expected, maybe they didn't numb my drum teachers teeth enough. Thanks a lot for the help mate :)

It came out a while ago and I have treated it just like a normal tooth, I don't know if it is infected or not but its slightly swolen at my gum but I thought that was just because of the pain.

I have booked one but its in 2 weeks! Crazy. Hope it doesn't get much worse over then 2 weeks. They have got me in for a "pain" appointment so chances are they will try and fix it there and then if possible.

i'm not trying to frighten you but my advise is have the tooth taken out it will be less painful

People seem to have a bad preception of root canal surgery without ever having had it for some reason. I've had it done twice (chipped tooth became infected then a broken tooth) and I can honestly say that it didn't hurt a bit. The worst bit is probably the taste of the anaesthetic if a little leaks out when they inject you.

Basically once the tooth's frozen they drill into it and pull the nerve out (remember it's frozen, you can't feel it) then fill it. I don't think I even had any discomfort afterwards....

In short - don't worry about it!! If the pain becomes unbearable before your appointment go in to the dentist first thing in the morning and ask for an emergency appointment....

It doesn't hurt at all. Anything has got to be better than toothache and false teeth.

I know what you're saying. Last time I had it years ago I was working nights and I was in agony, chewing pain killers like sweets. I was driven to the point where I had to walk out on shift and cycle round the city looking for a 24hr dentist at about 1am just to have the damn thing ripped out.

Unfortunately I had to wait as it was infected. I feel for anyone with toothache.
