Will the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S work in the UK?
May tell a relative to bring over one for me so was wondering whether I'll have all the same functionality as a standard Galaxy S in the UK and whether the network will work?

According to GSM arena, the 2g network speeds would work, but the 3g would not.

End of the day: get a Galaxy S or wait for the Nexus S xD

EDIT: I'm still reading up on these things, but it seems that the Samsung Captivate would work in the UK, as it uses the 1900/2100 data streams, instead of the 1700/2100 of the Vibrant. However I wouldn't be fully sure it would work.

Tough decision, just hope 3g works :p
And is it possible to flash the phone with UK firmware I wonder?

As it hasn't come out in the UK yet, no.

It's firmware isn't the problem with the 3g, it's the actual radios inside the phone.

The 3g in the vibrant would not work, the download is the same frequency, but the upload isn't, so how would they know what to download if you cant send any info?

Well I THINK so, the Galaxy S has 2g bands of GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
And 3g of HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100

The Samsung Captivate has 2g bands of GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 (exactly the same)
and 3g of HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 (50mhz off the 1st area)

So I'm not fully sure it would work, probably would. Seriously though there is NO difference spec wise between the Galaxy S and the Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate apart from the way they look.

OK lets say I go for the captivate, and then use it in the uk....will i have the UK android market or US?
or could i root the phone and flash it with some UK version of android FROYO 2.2?

Unsure about the markets, my guess would be it would be the US Market as it is a US phone.

There are ways to root the Captivate, but I don't think there are UK versions of Froyo for the Captivate, it doesn't matter where the ROM came from - people from around the world use Cyanogen ROMs for example, so it doesn't matter where the ROM, but whether or not the market and things would work, I am unsure.

Also chances are there will be AT&T bloatware on it, which I can definitely say would not work here.

By installing a custom ROM yeah, there are plenty of custom roms right here:

Thanks for that. So the network will most likely work, AT&T bloatware can be removed by flashing a custom ROM and android market will probably be US one.
Any way you could change it to UK?

Seems like you can do it :)
Link here
Apparently doesn't work with 1.6...no mention of 2.1 or 2.2.....

Yep definitely possible. Another link lol
more here...
Seems like I'll save a few quid here and there and get myself a captivate, root it, flash with froyo and change market! :p
