This usually happens when the drive is NTFS format. Unless its causing you some specific grief I wouldnt worry about it too much. The read only is an attribute more than a permission issue. You could check to see if there are any security constraints on your C (or whatever your windows install drive is) drive as it may be some action that security software has carried out unknowingly by it being installed.

But if its not causing any problems then leave it be! Cheers.
i think it is causing me problems as windows explorer is always crashing
any more suggestions?
look in explorer and choose folders, right click, then choose properties for the folders question. untick "read only" and restart PC
each time i uncheck read only, it goes through the motions of applying the correct permissions to all the folders within the folder. but then as soon as you clcik okay all the folders are readonly again.
Is it a light gray check or a dark black check in the read only box? Which folder are you talking about?
light gray/green box in side the check box. its all my folders
Read only has no real meaning in Windows for folders. It can be neither set or unset via Explorer. If you check / uncheck the box for a folder and there's files within then those files will have their attributes changed unless you tell it otherwise.

If you create a new folder it'll show the same, grey "mixed state" checkbox.
so you thik the crashing issue is something else

looks like a reinstall is the quickest fix then
