microsoft has announced that when windows 7 launches in May ... you will be able to downgrade to xp or vista for free ......

this is due to many peoples reluctance to switch from XP ......

Xp has seen a resurgence of late (with the introduction of netbooks) so microsoft has kept delaying the "shutdown" of XP .......

its not been said if you can later move back upto Windows 7

Only one week before mainstream support ends for XP though, if it's like Windows 2000 in that regard then XP is going to become less desirable as new incompatible software is released.

Close but not quite, the option to downgrade isn't just because of reluctance

There is reluctance to move on from xp in general because XP can almost be considered a perfect OS. Not in terms of its features but in the fact It has been extensively developed and bug fixed etc. with the added factor that it has been around so long most people can work their way around it after all it is what 8 years old now?

Vista Failed because it was a little buggy and almost rushed. and didn't fit in with businesses or with consumer needs, im not a Vista hater, infact i use it myself

Windows 7 however will fit in almost perfectly with the life-cycle of Servers and business hardware.
the option to downgrade is commonplace and in fact a necessity as it takes time for businesses to transition across and I think that MS have got this right this time!

Im actually quite looking forward to using it.

MS have said that some OEM computers purchased near to the release date will be eligible for a free upgrade to win7 (as per the xp > Vista upgrades last time round), as for the exact period i'm not sure

I've not tried it - or even thought about it. Vista is enough to put me off - at least until they sort things out properly. Much better to wait and let the problems with drivers and compatability be resolved first.

I've not tried it
which makes your point a bit unfounded? if you had tried it, you'd know that even the beta fo win7 is widely regarded as a far better product than Vista even after 2 S.P's

I haven't tried it myself but most of the talk I've heard is that it's just vista (as it is now) with a few extras. In what way would you say it was better?

vista is crap, Windows 7 is gonna blow both xp and vista out of the water.

Seriously the beta version runs better, more features, much quicker on W7 than xp on the slowest of hardware.

It is seriously good.

# *much* more responsive
# more stable
# not prone to hang in Explorer like Vista
# plenty of genuinely useful UI enhancements [pinning, app preview windows etc.
# various media centre improvements - e.g. MHEG ['red button'] functionality, better UI

i could go on but i suspect anyone reading is already asleep

I like the sound of windows 7 anyway of getting hold of it or has the chance gone?
