Been trying this out for a few days so thought I'd post my findings so people are aware of why it is so bad.

1. It does not do a true sync therefore if you delete files on your hard drive, they still remain forever in your backup repository.

2. You cannot delete files from a backup. You have to delete the entire backup.

3. Considering points 2 & 3 above, this means your backup repository will just get bigger and bigger.

4. If you select folders manually to backup, it ignores your settings. E.G. I selected my user folder to be backed up but not sub-folder DOWNLOADS. It still backed up about half of the sub-folders in this folder! And you cannot get to the sub-folders to unselect them either.

5. If you point the backup to back up to an external device (e.g. external hard drive) and have a schedule to say run weekly, then if the external device is not connected when it tries to backup, then it just doesnt perform the backup. The problem here is that no warning is presented to warn you ever that the backup was missed.

I suggest using Acronis True Image until these bugs are fixed.

That's why people don't use it, that's what 3rd party apps are for if i have to backup 20 clients i wouldn't use windows backup its only really for files and settings and there are way better products out there like Acronis true image.

The last time I even tried to use windows backup was on my home Vista64 machine just to backup my emails and it couldn't manage that.

Did you try using scheduled tasks from the management console, that's where all the proper stuffs done not form the pretty start menu and i cant believe for one minute that Microsoft haven't got that right i think its more a user setup issue. Ive installed windows7 on the family's computers but haven't had time to install my Ultimate copy yet so will check it out when i do but usually with things like that its event viewer that needs to be checked.

but these are basic flaws which should have been sorted for windows 7 imo.

when I open the backup utility, it does tell me that it missed the external backup but it really should be a systray warning imho so you can then just set if off manually.

7 is full of little bugs in my opinion. I bought it on release date. I installed windows live movie maker and it decided to wipe out my google picasa and auslogics icons on the taskbar !!

But, I never use the backup feature. Every month or so I will simply copy and paste the folders in my account folder, simples. I know there is no settings etc but that doesnt matter so much.

fair enough - I just like to have it auto backed up weekly in the background. gonna stick with true image.

Each to their own, if I bought Acronis I would probably do the same. But I dont trust any media lol. Ive lost all my data before!

You can never fault copying and pasting the ness folders !

Backup programs are not supposed to delete files, syncing is something separate to backing up (although obviously related) and not deleting stuff you've deleted from your hard drive is correct behaviour for a backup. If you want to sync instead I suggest you use a syncing utility (I don't know if Windows 7 has one).
