Managed to get my server up and running with streaming working fine

Now looking to add more things, is there any way I can add nzb files from any machine and it will download the relevant file to the server, whereby I can move them into the relevant folder?

Also, is there any way of plugging my printer in and using it as a print server? No Ethernet on my printer (obv) just usb

Sabnzbd is your friend!!

You can just add a printer as normal in windows then share it.

Thanks, is sabnzbd an add-in? Or more complicated than that?

It's basically a headless nzb app. You install and it runs as a service. You then access through a web browser so you can access it anywhere on your lan or even over the internet if you wanted. I have mine linked to my nzbmatrix account so I can just take the nzb link from nzb matrix and enter it into sab's web interface and it starts the downloading on your server - awesome if you ask me.

Start mixing it up with the renamer/ember/event ghost/belvedere and you can start automating the whole downloading process. You can set it all up to:

1. Download the latest tv show episode for you based on info you give.
2. Repair and extract the file.
3. Rename the file and move to your tv shared folder in the correct folder format (eg show name>season>episode
4. episode information and artwork all downloaded for you.

All the above done without lifting a finger! Same goes for movies except part 1 will need to be manual for obvious reasons.

Sounds good... but tend to read posts to see if the DL is worthwhile or not. (ie quality.... hard coded subs etc)

That is exactly what I want!!

Have found this tutorial which I'm going to have a go at.

May be needing to ask more questions though :)

TV shows tend to be fine, there's normally only one HD 720p release for example, it's only if it's nuked then you've downloaded a dud but that doesn't happen that often and wouldn't bother me too much. The general convenience outweighs the odd occasion you have to redownload manually.

I can't help you on your query by the way, not been affected by power issues. Not sure what you mean by the RAID situation either.

The server has 4 2TB drives, which Ive added from within WHS2003 to be seen as one raid drive. But when the machine boots, the PCI SATA card I installed asks if I want it to be RAID (and format drives I assume) or F1 to continue. Obviously, it needs manual input to continue the boot process. Annoying because it has overheated (I assume) at some point, and doesnt end rebotting as it gets stuck.

Ah I get you. I had a similar problem with one in my server when it was on some old hardware, PC wouldn't boot past the PCI sata section unless I disconnected the drives to get beyond the raid screen then reconnected before windows screen. Was a pain if the power did go off or an auto update (before I disabled) restarted the server. Don't have that problem now though as all sata ports are on mobo so no need for card.

SOunds like you need some way of skipping that screen, no idea how though.

Not going incredibly well, have installed sabNZBd, went into settings and changed the webserver host to the IP of the server, saved changes and restarted it, it hit an error and now won't let me access it again

Task manager and quit process then relaunch. Bit of a pain but I only have to do it every now and then.
#12
Had to un install and re-install, wouldn't load at all, think it's because I've changed the IP

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/sancho_1983/Capture-13.jpg

I'm putting the IP of the server into the Host box, but then when I try to open http://192.168.xx.yy:8080/sabnzbd/ (obviously with correct ip) it doesn't work, nor does the original IP
#13
I give up, I'm in over my head, I'll just carry on doing it the way I do it at the moment oO

Thanks for the help though, might try it at a later date

LOL... I know! The machine I'm using is an old Dell. I'm confident that if I plonked it all in another PC, it would all still work - but thats the thing...if it doesn't Ive lost everything!

Just thought of something else! My router is fine for port forwarding and WHS manages to set it automatically. However, often it screws up and the server says port forwarding has failed.

It has too many devices connecting, so really I should be setting up on a domain and name the machines. Got any good guides for doing this? Again, its a case of worrying about screwing things up (and not having the time or inclination to sit down and learn it!)
#15
One more question, should I have a usb drive attached to the server to take a backup of my media? I have folder duplication on but just worried that if the system fails, or I had to re install for any reason I would lose everything
banned#16
Sancho, when you're fiddling with the settings you're best accessing the webserver directly on the WHS machine. If it fails to load up you need to quit the process in taskmanager then relaunch using the application shortcut, not the webinterface as it's not running yet.

It's possible there's a conflict with port 8080, mine is on 8090 due to a conflict.

I use a usb drive to back my photos folder up so I can keep them offsite in the event of a fire and in case my server had a catastrophic meltdown and I lost everything. I've got terrabytes worth of videos so I don't bother backing those up, they can easily be replaced.

Guv - when I switched my disks into a different PC I just ran the WHS disc, it recognised I had WHS shares and just installed the OS, keeping all my data intact. It should work fine but there are no guarantees in IT!
Domains aren't supported in WHS unfortunately. Sounds like you might need a new solution, have you considered a linux based filer?

Thanks again, might back up my photos and films every so often to my 1tb drive and leave it at a mates house.

Think I'm confused about what you mean by accessing it directly on the WHS. I installed sabNZBd on my laptop, do you mean I should plug a monitor into my server and physically install it on there? I thought the idea was that I installed it on my laptop and then changed the settings so the server could access it, as could anything else on the network.

Although I'm a bit confused about what sabnzbd is, I use altbinz on my PC/Laptop, I'm thinking it's he same as that but web based?

Sorry for dumb questions but you know what you're talking about!!

Edit - Getting a little further than last night - Now getting

Welcome to SABnzbd-console.exe 0.5.4

SABnzbd needs a free tcp/ip port for its internal web server.
Port 8090 on 192.168.1.66 was tried , but the account used for SABnzbd has no permission to use it.
On OSX and Linux systems, normal users must use ports above 1023.

Please restart SABnzbd with a different port number.

1.66 being the IP of my server, thinking about it should it be a different IP? as the server is on that one.

I would install sabnzbd on the server. You can leave it doing its thing then. You shouldn't need a monitor for the server, you should just remote on using RDP which comes with Windows normally. Alternatively download VNC.

When sab is installed on your server you can then access it from any PC on your network to configure and add nzbs. Initial set up should be done on the server itself but after that you should be able to get by using the browser on your laptop. Altbinz is an application that runs as such, it's only accessible from the PC it's installed on. Because Sab installs as a service and has a webserver element to it you can operate from anywhere, you just need the ip address of server and correct port.

Ok, I gave up following the thing I was following and did what you said, got it installed ok, manage to see it on my laptop too.

I've set up three folders on the server for complete/incomplete and scanning, if I remote desktop into the server what format do I need to put the folders in the relevant part of the config section, I tried

\\[SERVERNAME]\Usenet\complete

But when I save it it reverts back to the presets

I've set mine on the D drive unshared. So I have:

d:\downloads\complete
and
d:\downloads\incomplete

I then have it set up so TV shows move to my tv show folder within the Videos share and movies to the movie folder on Videos share and same with music to Music share.

To be honest I only use RDP to do anything on the server but you can create shares and do it all through explorer should you want.

ok, so how would you then add an NZB to the queue? I presumed I would just put it in the 'scan' folder, but in order to do that it would have to be shared?

Or do I open sabnzbd on my laptop and do it from there?

Also, when you say you have it set up so tv shows move to the relevant share folder where do I do that?

Generally I just go on the server and download nzb from chrome on there, .nzb files set to open with sab and to open on download. If using the laptop then you use the add nzb function at top of interface and copy and paste link in there. If using nzbmatrix you will need to add account in the options as well as a code from nzbmatrix site.
#23
Thanks, just had a go at adding it from the laptop and it worked ok with a downloaded nzb, but not the link, I'll add the account as I am using nzbmatrix.

Guess I'l work out the best way of doing it, either that or going on the server and doing it.

Trying to work out where it will unrar it!

Edit - Suppose I should install winrar first!

It extracts and unrars for you into the completed folder.

lol, just noticed. Looks an awesome program.

Just looking at changing the completed folder to a different one, on D:\ (as C:\ only has 10gb free) when I go to change the folders it says

In "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents"

obviously whatever folder I put in the field will be within C:\ etc. etc. whereas I want to change it to D:\

Not sure if that was a question but yes just change both entries to d:\whatever\...

Edit - Forget all of that, it says "You may use absolute paths to save outside of the default folders", so not sure why it's not working.

What do you use to automatically move files from D:\complete to the relevant share folder? I have found a program called download mover 1.1, didn't know if you use a different/better one

Thanks loads mate, will save any other questions I have until tomorrow :)

To move it I use eventghost which monitors the folder and opens up therenamer which is set to rename and move the file to the relevant place.

Did you install therenamer on the server? I'm having issues getting it to install, wouldn't wok on server, desktop or laptop (won't open) - From reading around it seemed to be a flash issue, so I installed Flash through IE (as suggested) and it works on the laptop. Will uninstall it and try again now flash has been installed.

What part does eventghost play in the process? From what I can see with therenamer you can set an 'input' and 'output' folder for both TV Shows and Films

eventghost monitors the downloads folder for a file then will run therenamer. The renamer does have folder monitoring but I couldn't get it working.

There are multiple ways to achieve the same thing so don't take mine as gospel. Have a fiddle, play around with it. Look at that guide I posted in post 8.

Yeah that guide makes a lot more sense now i've been playing about and reading stuff. In there it uses a Torrent downloader, presume something must exist for NZBs? Not essential though tbh, I'm quite happy manually getting them, just would be nice for the other end to be a bit more automated.

Still can't get therenamer to open on the server, seems an older version might work but there's no download history on the site, only the current version

Got therenamer working, I had to add theRenamer to bypass DEP in system properties.

Works really well on a few test files, now just setting up eventghost

Good luck, I had a nightmare with it. Make sure it's set up correctly. First time I left it running and downloaded some stuff it opened up dozens of instances of renamer as it process each unique file in the folder. Completely locked me out.
#36
Just tested it and seemed ok, I didn't bother with half of the stuff on the tutorial as I'm happy with xbmc scraping. I just have it to scan the folder, then open renamer, which then moved them to the correct place (didn't need to rename them as they were files I'd used to test therenamer)

Not used event ghost before, I saved the configuration(?) Does event ghost have to be open all of the time? How does it know to watch the folder etc?

Nope, not working

If i click on "start program - TheRenamer.exe" and press play it all works as it should. Sure I'm doing something obvious wrong

Like I said ages ago I'm in over my head, if it doesn't work as it should not sure how to fix it!

MC.. this is doing my head in!

All machines running XP, Win 7 or XBMC seem to connect to the server OK. But one machine (an AZbox satellite receiver) is being a pain.

It was working fine... but yesterday I rebooted the server and now it cant be seen by the receiver. I really don't think its the receiver thats causing the problems.

I know when connecting more than 5 devices (which I am) its recommended to use domains and name each device.... But even after searching, its baffling the hell out of me! Any ideas on what I can try? Ive rebooted the server and receiver, but it makes no odds.

Finally, I've got round to tidying my computer room. Its just been a tip since the building work, but with Christmas around the corner! So the server now even has a closed case with the 5 drives in and nicely placed under the desk.. looks pretty neat if I do so so myself! Just need to borrow a couple of longer sata cables from work so I can relly reconnect that machine and bring the others into play - and not to mention the 24" screen I bought June last year and still not out of the box!

I still think WHS is a great piece of software, drive extender really is some outstanding tech which makes it all the more of a shame that they're dropping it for the new WHS. Sabnzbd still the best NZB client I've used so far.

I'm contemplating an unRAID set up next, need to keep tinkering. I'm like a shark with my tech, need to keep moving.

Dont be sorry...MC can now look at post 38 now!

PS - it seems you cant assign a domain in WHS2003. I've still got problems with dropouts with the satellite box if either is rebooted.
