Windows Media Player 11 - wont update !! Neither will Windows SP3 ???

I'm running Windows XP with SP2, and WMP 10 currently. I'm trying to install
version 11 to enable streaming/sharing to my PS3. I've tried about a
hundred times to install it, and looked online searching for answers. Haven't
found a solution yet. It finishes going through the install progress, and
then says the setup failed, I need to reboot and basically try again.

I've tried diasabling all of my firewalls and anti-spyware etc......whilst installing but still no joy.

Now Windows Media Player wont even open - can anyone help????

Once you'd re-installed Windows - were you able to update WMP 11 without any problem?

What version of XP are you on (there are known issues with XP Media Centre Edition)

Try downloading the WMP 11 code again from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1D224714-E238-4E45-8668-5166114010CA&displaylang=en

Try this:

Try uninstaling Windows Media Player completely

Then power PC off and on (to remove all settings)

Try to re-install WMP 11 again

I have XP & I'm running windows media player 11 but with SP3, so maybe you need to get the latest SP to be able to install it - upgrade from SP2 to SP3. Just a thought :)

You do not need to go to SP3 to install WMP 11.

Says so on this web site (see System Requirements)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1D224714-E238-4E45-8668-5166114010CA&displaylang=en

However going to SP3 is probably a good idea anyway.

I have installed SP3 about half a dozen times and never had a problem.

There are some "known issues" here for WMP 11 (scroll down)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx

Have you done a "Windows Update" to download all the latest XP fixes ?

Did it work correctly (I have had Windows Update go wrong on me before now)

See if there are any messages in your windows message log

1) Open the Windows Control Panel

2) Choose Performance and Maintenance (if you have the Category View)

3) Then choose Administrative Tools

4) Then double click on Event Viewer. This opens the Event Viewer window.

5) Click on "Application" on the left and see if there are any error messages (red X)

Double click on any message to reas the full text

6) Click on "System" on the left and see if there are any error messages

If the WMP 11 install is failing it may have written some error message here (it may not be caused by WMP but maybe some other problem.)

This page may help

http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html

Scroll down and it talks about a set up file used during the install, may be called wmsetup.log.

See if you have that file and if there are any messages in it.

What exactly is happening when you try to install SP3, error message, etc etc?

Also autopatcher may help.

I've checked in the Event Viewer and there are numerous entries with errors. I believe the SP3 fault is:-

Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: with error: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

And the WMP 11:-
Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 11.0.5721.5145, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.3119, fault address 0x00012a5b.

I've got SP3 on laptop had WMP11 too, but un-installed it as that well known DRM program doesn't work with WMP11 yet.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) was beefed up in Windows Media Player 11, making it nigh impossible to strip bought wma files from legit online music stores, of their Digital Rights Management key, which then lets you play and copy the track/video as many times as you like.

I now have Vista + WMP11 on this PC and XP + WMP10 on laptop

Agreed! 99% of SP3 is already installed via auto-update over the last year. the other 1% just seems to ruin my PC :x
