I was kidding, dont trust anyone who says they will check it for you, was it a ebay trader who sells lots or just a few? pm me a link to the seller i'll see if they look legit, I dont think there is anyway of telling pre installation though

Q:
How do I know if my Windows software is genuine?
A:

Microsoft offers an online validation process that allows you to verify that your copy of Windows is genuine. You will be prompted to validate your copy of Windows if you request a genuine Windows download from the Microsoft Download Center. Alternatively, you can validate your copy of Windows by going to the Genuine Microsoft Software homepage and clicking "Validate Windows". The validation process is easy to use, only takes a few moments to run, and once completed, allows you to access genuine Windows downloads more quickly in the future.

lkooks like you can maybe try and download a copy

1. Insert the Installation CD into your CD / Drive Drive.
2. Explore the CD and navigate to the i386 folder.
3. Open the file UNATTEND.txt and scroll down to the last line.
4. You will find your Windows XP Product key there.

A genuine xp disc would not have the key on it, the one you refer to is one of the "custom" unattended install discs.

OEM disks sometimes have them ive got one from HP which shows this

the oem copies of windows xp did not retail at £300 (or even at all), some dubious firms sold them as little as £50 on a trade basis so i suspect there are many genuine ones being sold off cheaply now ;)
do as suggested simply change the key on your installed copy and validate(as long as its not a cracked copy), if it fails validation then you have reason to complain to this guy.
