Windows Vista Basic Help Anyone Please???

Hi All,

My OH has a Laptop that came with Vista Basic, I put XP Pro on it for her about 18 months ago, but now she wants to sell it. I dont want to give my XP COA away with her laptop, so want to put Vista back on it. Is there anyone here who can create a ISO file from there CD and Rar it up for me and send it to me through MSN Messenger??? I am on Virgin so if you are too it should not take to long to send the file.

I have tried the requesting a new DVD on MS site but it wont let me do it (from what I have read, I think its cos the laptop had [not anymore] a vista partistion OEM and they only replace retail copies) I also DO NOT want to download from a torrent site as I want to make sure it is a ISO that has been played with, so please dont suggest Torrent sites ;)

Thanks for everyone who might be able to help,

You can create an .iso of the cd with imgburn. Click create image from files/folders then drag all the cd's contents to the box, and choose where you want to save it. Also a vista .iso will be 3-4 GB. Why not just send the cd with the pc ? Just format the drive and provide the key

What make/model of laptop is it?

On some models you can buy recovery discs from ebay sellers usually cheaper than you can from the manufacturer of your laptop.

Usually laptops that come with a recovery partition on your harddrive recommend the first thing you do is make recovery discs with a program usually installed on your laptop, of course most people don't realize this until they need to recover the PC back to factory settings and have to buy the recovery discs from the manufacturer for £20-30+

I got caught out once like this and its always the first thing i check with a laptop :)

This is how I got caught out, MY OH had the laptop before we got together and I thought it would just come with disc's, as I have always built my own PC's so always buy OEM disc's. I was hopeing someone could msn me the disc, as i have done for a mate before for XP, but i dont know anyone with retail Vista discs.

The Laptop is a Acer 5315, i dont think buying recoverey discs will work as they will have the COA of that user installed with Vista???

You kidding, you're looking at like 5+hrs to send it, and WLM isn't reliable so it will fail.

You need my collection of Vista.

Also to anyone else I can give you access to my FTP site for you to upload to if that is easier

The only person selling recovery discs for your model is in the USA for £5.10 delivered http://tinyurl.com/y9xfh63

of course it may take a few weeks to arrive but when using the recovery discs for your specific laptop it dosent require you to enter the serial number when installing

PCs don't use the COA key stuck on the bottom anyway, they all use the same manufacturers key as it would take to long to type in a unique key on every PC.

Cheers for that, i never knew that, I jsut assumed (Badly) that the backup made from the files they give you on your PC would do something clever like pulling the code form your system, but apparently not.

Unless I'm mistaken this is only the drivers. It specifically says
"Requirements:
- DVD Drive Reader is needed to use this Software
- Microsoft Windows Installed (Operating System is NOT included) "

Ah, crap, your right, should have read the description better instead of assuming!

It seems that Acer laptops have a 'hidden' recovery partition:

http://en.kioskea.net/faq/2040-acer-pc-restore-to-factory-settings#no-restore-cd-erecovery-password-alt-f10-or-f10

also here:http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/243980-14-acer-laptop-recovery-help

you should still be able to recover the factory setings

I did not check that well at 3am last night, but good spot, thanks :)

mumbojumbo
If your XP Pro licence and COA were OEM, then you've lost it anyway - it will not re-activate on another computer.

It is not OEM, and even if it was you can reactivate it after a lot of hardware changes by just ringing MS up

I know about that, my point was when does an upgraded machine become a new machine. After talking to MS about another OEM copy i have, they were ok about the many upgrades which were basically a new PC.
