Hi
Can anyone give me some advice on my computer problem. I have windows vista on a dell laptop. Its been playing up for a while, and I have been having to switch it off by the power key, but now when powering up it will not go past the black screen that says microsoft corporation at the bottom. I have tried the repair and also tried booting up from the vista DVD, but I select install vista and the option to upgrade and keep my files is greyed out. It says to do this from Windows, but as I cant get into windows I cannot do it! Can anyone give me any idea.
Thanks for ideas in advance

You should be able to run it in safe mode (F8 on startup). See where it's getting stuck....

Try a system restore instead of reinstalling...

your DVD booting should provide "Repair Your Computer" option. You'll find the system restore option there

Hi
Have tried this, it goes through the program and then has a blue screen with a large arrow after and then nothing.

if you cant do safe mode and/or system restore, IMO theres no other way than to do a clean install..

The only CERTAIN way you can save your data is by taking out the HDD and backup the files by connecting it to a working computer.

Unless you have the data and OS in a separate partition. that would be OK i think
You can also try do a clean install and see if the installation allow you to create a new partition from the unused space in the disk. this will possibly save your data albeit risky.
Another way is to boot using DOS-based disk partition software, and create new blank partition for your new installation. and thus save the current OS/Data partition
