Tried to download MSE but it says that I haven't got a genuine copy of windows installed - this came preinstalled on pc some years ago. I have the original cd incase I need to reinstall but I don't have the key for it, is there any way of getting the key. I have found the registry key for the version loaded on to my pc but it does not match the one for the cd - as I found when I tried it.
Am I stuffed?

The version stored in the registry is encrypted so will not match your one. You need to download a little program that will tell you your windows key (can't remember the name of the one I have).

I think that Belarc Advisor gives all keys on your computer software.

It is 100% safe.

the key should be stuck to the machine, if its not you have a pirate copy and are out of luck

Most versions of Windows that we "home " users buy are for installation on one PC, so you have ONE CD and ONE key that can be used on ONE computer.

However Microsoft also sell Enterprise versions of Windows for use in large companies where it will be installed on hundreds of PCs.

In this case the company dont have hundreds of boxes of Windows, they just have one or two CDs, and then a key that will work for all the companies PCs.

Unfortunately these Enterprise keys sometimes leak out and are sold on the open market.

This MAY have happened in your case.

You may have a genuine key, but it is for the use of a large company and not an indicudual user.

Tried Jelly Bean this gives you the number in the registry - which I have already found doesn't match the cd one, is there any way of finding out the key on the cd? There is no number on the pc it is several years old and the company I bought it from doesn't exist any more think easist bet is to just download AVG or something similar.
