windows xp advice

Needing a little advice before I start messing around with this, the problem is that my mums friend got her computer "fixed" by some shady type and has stuck a dodgy copy of windows xp pro on it and now microsft has found out.

I want to keep this legal as to be honest I can't be bothered with the hassle that might happen further down the line with keygens, activators etc so anyway the tower has a xp home editon sticker on it complete with legit key so I was wondering is my best bet to format the comp and stick a copy of home edition on it or is there an easier way to get the comp legal other than buy a copy of xp pro?

I think that just about makes sense if not ask away and I'll try explain.

i know in vista you can change the license key in windows but for xp i think it will take another reinstall of xp then use the legit key! you may need to speak to M$ depending if the key has been registered before but all you say is you did a reinstall and they would unlock it!

yeah thats what I was thinking, havn't used xp in years so wasn't sure. just loathed to do a clean install as they never kept any discs for the printer, webcam and all the software etc they have on it.

yeah but I couldn't possibly discuss it on here, besides all those activators are filled with viruses despite what the makers make out

lol I know what you mean my vista machines are always getting viruses from those nasty activators:oops:

But nah the only reason I don't want to go down that route is because if something does go wrong with it then I'll be the one called on to deal with it and then I'll never be away from the place fixing everything else that just so happens to be wrong with it.

The only reason I'm getting roped into this is because I went round to set up their broadband and while I was there my wonderful mum said I'd deal with this for them as well.

You don't need to reinstall to change the key on xp. I think the poster above linked to the page to tell you how.

Have you had a look for the restore disks that may have come with the PC?

In my opinion, you should download a copy of xp home and use your legit key.

You have a valid right to the software.

some confusion here but anyway the answer is no
you will have to re-install, the keys for pro and home do not mix and as she has a valid licence for home no point in spending anymore money buying another.

back up all your drivers with a one of the many driver programs out there, then run files and transfer wizard, then the long drawn out complete reinstall, go to microsoft and download sp2 here - http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a and sp3 here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en as separate install downloads, a lot quicker than windows update. should be no problem with the key on the case.
