Hi,

I have a genuine copy of Windows XP pro, but do not have the serial number for it. Is there any way you can find it

I cant take a look at the pc it is installed on as it was failing to boot, the computer shop told me that the hardrive had gone but I've managed to semi fix it, enough to try and reinstall windows on a wiped hardrive again.

Any help appreciated (also appreciate this is not a pc help forum, but you guys are always really helpful!

I could give you a key, but don't think that's what you want. Other than that, I don't know of a way.

Just a quick blast on google, "find my windows xp licence key", got me THIS
Not sure if you have your copy of xp installed fully on a hd, it's not clear

So, do you have the copy of XP you wanna know about, working or not?

If it was intsalled when you bought it, you should find a sticker somewhere on the case with your serial on.

Thats what I thought, but the reason I'm having all the problems is that the computer was damaged in a fire, the ins have replaced the case etc, but told my sister/inlaw it was fixed, obivously it isnt and I said i'd take a look for her. So I dont have the original case or paperwork that came with it.

The dvd drive is also not working, and she has backed up to DVD, which isnt readable in mine for some reason...oh thr joy

If the hard drive is wiped clean then Jellybean or any other program will be unable to retrieve it. If your copy of XP is legit then first contact the original manufacturer then if all else fails Microsoft themselves - You can contact them twice for free.

I dont have anything installed on the PC, only the xp pro disk. The hardrive was failing and refused to boot. Since the computer place said there was no hope I did a few things and managed to access to hardrive but only via dos to clear it down.

Thinking we had the serial code (doh) I continued, didnt matter since the PC place said it was for the scrap, I gave it a go

It now boots, and goes all the way to the "enter serial number" but i've entered the one I thought it was from the documentation we had left but it doesnt work, so I'm assuming that was for another computer.

The links given are really for a pc that is already booted to find the keys, I really need to extract it from the CD? if this is possible. If not looks like I shall have to buy them a new copy!

Just out of interest, if I wanted to start again and load xphome, which I also have a copy of - how can I lose the setup files for the xp pro - as when I try and boot it from the disk, it is still using the setup files stored for the xp pro

I only want to check how bad the computer is, otherwise it'll prob be cheaper to buy a new one, so really dont want to spend on a new XP pro sp1 disk if i can help it

if I try to fdisk the c drive it says abort/etc etc

You will be able to activate XP using any valid CD-Key as that's not the bit used to register XP with Microsoft. During installation, the software builds an 'hardware hash' from information about your PC hardware and sends that along with ther serial number stored on the installation disk (not the CD-Key) and validates it against a known list of pirate versions. n.b. If you right click on 'My Computer' you will see you serial number.

Even if your version came back listed as dodgy, it will still install and work as normal.

If you right click, you don't see the serial number you enter during install, cos it's an alpha numerical code on install, or i'm i looking in wrong place?

The number you enter isn't the serial number. It's a CD key and has little bearing on the installation other than allowing the installation to progress. Network Admins use a single key when installing Xp on 100's of PCs.

Thanks, you learn summat new everyday :)

They XP key is encrypted within a file called ntuser.dat if you have erased the drive then unfortunately it's gone - unless someone can suggest some incredible free software to restore deleted files.

Microsoft may be the way to go.

I've got a copy of xphome, bought it for my mac, but then decided not to go that way. How can I install thi instead - if I put it in, it just keeps asking me for a file from the XP pro disk. cant seem to get back to where I was before I started with the xp pro disk?

Just stick the CD in the drive, switch the computer on and boot from CD. Install the software and enter any CD Key you can find. Search Google for XP Pro CD Key.

if you google for a cd key then install xp pro when it comes to the updates microsoft knows that the cd key is a pirated version and will not let you update...:pirate: not that this matters that much:giggle:

grdesign has offered you a key so I suggest you PM him and ask nicely...as someone has advised there are loads of keys flying around that will get the software installed...albeit that it will probably be recognised as pirated and all you'll get is the critical updates.
