Ive only ever used XP and Vista, still prefer XP over Vista myself. How does windows 7 fit into the picture.

In other words rank them.

hated vista with a passion, liked xp, as for windows 7 i think it is far better than vista, although i still like xp

Skipped Vista, but I do like Win 7.
Wouldn't go back to XP.

Does windows 7 perform task on average quicker than the other 2, such as login, start up time?

windows 7 startup time is epic

Agree with everything said above. XP was more than adequate at the time. Vista came with my laptop and was terrible. Cant begin to list the problems I had. Bought Windows 7 on launch (through a deal on here of course) and have never looked back.

Win 7 is Vista fixed - takes less memory, runs faster, fewer annoying popups, fewer problems.

Win 7 shutdown time seems better than XP but startup is longer, particularly if you have wireless in my experience. There again it does start more programs up like the sidebar and gadgets for example, so it's not all just lazy programming!

There's already rumours that Win 8 will have better startup time, so I'd guess that there's been a lot of complaints about that.

Vista was ok, Better than xp, Never had the problems some people report, Don't quite understand the hate.

Windows 7 is the best, Is quicker and seems reliable as well.

Seems Windows goes in cycles of love and hate.

For example

Win 95 Love

Win 98 Hate

Win Xp Love

Vista Hate

Win 7 Love

Next OS Hate

I might as well wait for Windows 9

Like 7 is to Vista?

I actually like Vista. Once I spanked it into submission and made it act how I wanted that is. Win 7 is OK, just seems like an updated Vista to me.

Yeah thats exactly what it feels like. A Vista that actually works

7 is really good. I don't think vista was as bad as everyone says (although 7 is a lot quicker and has a better user interface). XP just seems too old to me these days after using vista and 7 for years!

Im still on xp and still love it. I hated vista only tried it for 1 day and took it off it was a pack of cack. Im also not keen on windows 7.

My main problem is microsoft moving things around. I mean why on earth did they remove quicklaunch from win7, what the hell was wrong with it? Its been there since windows 95 i think. Yes I know you can put it back with a few clicks/hacks but thats just a prime example. They messed around with it too much if you ask me and I just cant get used to it.

I do think they designed win 7 and vista mostly to safe guard users rather than looking at a performace point of view. It doesnt perform any faster if you ask me, theres also the problems with transfering files, that takes forever on windows 7 for some reason.

Im sticking with XP and not moving yet. Although the new adobe after effects only works on windoes 7 so I will have to upgrade at some point... I think ill dual boot for that one though.

never had problems with vista but windows 7 crashes at least once a week requiring a hard reset

wouldnt have upgraded as its not much different.

XP is just crap now in comparison.

you sure you have the right os for your computer ? Vista is horrible and was the slowest piece of ... i've ever used. windows 7 however runs faster than xp, never crashes and has a much better UI.
