Hey guys, just wondering if you could help out with a quick question or two.

I'm currently running Windows XP on my PC which I built myself, the XP CD is a Dell OEM version, plus I have a valid license etc. I have an upgrade CD for Windows 7 Ultimate which I got from Software4Students, I know that if I upgrade it does a clean installation which isn't a problem.
However, if I decide in the future to upgrade, or change my PC will I be able to re-install from the Windows 7 CD for a fresh version of windows? Or would I have to install XP, THEN upgrade/install 7?
Thanks a lot!

I was under the impression that, if you start from a fresh, empty HDD the upgrade Windows7 disk will just install for you as a "Clean Install".

I'm awaiting a copy from Software4Students and was just going to buy a new HDD and start from scratch.

I tried to install win 7 upgrade on a new PC with no OS and it got as far as the licence key bit then refused to take it.

had to reformat it put xp on then do a clean install which reformatted it again and put win 7 on - it took the licence key this time though.

Info on how to do it here, although it might not be what you are looking for (it would defeat the point of having an 'upgrade' disk if you can just do a clean install from it -

The simpler way is easy
Do the clean install using the Student disc, DON'T put the product (licence) key in.
When finished pop the disc in the cd again while windows is running, run the setup program and upgrade, it will then take the licence key without a problem.

For the record Software for Student disc are bootable, and will do an upgrade or clean install.
The licence key is for an upgrade, ie if you dont have an operating system already install it then upgrade it afterwards.

By the way to the oroginal poster an upgrwade will NOT wip your files, you wont lose any documents or information on the computer.

Cheers - good to know for next time. I was trying to install it on release day so was limited to the information I could find. It was easier\quicker for me to just stick xp on then upgrade at the time.
