I'm getting really fed up with my wireless connection. In the system tray it nearly always says that i have a excellent connection and the speed is 54Mbps, but when browsing the internet it all ways cuts out and i get the could not find the server message. the thing is my brothers laptop normally works perfectly as does my mam's work computer. i used this computer and the same wifi dongle for a year at uni (last year) and never once had a problem, yet no im constantly having to repair my connection and often give up cause it simply won't work.

has anyone got any advice on how to stop this and increase the reliabilty of connection

i am on sky broadband and i'm using the router that came free (the netgear one) im connecting to the router with an asus wl-167g usb dongle

EDIT Looks the the dongle is either broke or just rubbish. can any recommend a new one. I've been looking at internal cards as well. Does anyone have any experience with these. Would they recommend a dongle or a card?

Are you always having to 'acquire network address' or something similar?

Buy a USB A- A extension cable 1.8M and move the usb dongle up onto the desktop closer to the router. See what it's like then.
Also change the channel, someone else around you may have 54G+ or even an N router that will kill your signal.

tintern: no i can always connect and nearly all the time my signal is excellent

myjess: the computer connection is upstair so i dont think an extension would help much, i would try another channel but the other devices seem to function okay. if something was interfering with my signal would i still have excellent signal strength and full network speed?

Proabably not, but interference could make problems, think its more likely to be down to local conditions if this is a tried and trusted hardware config,
try to watch;
check the router itself, bring up the status page see if it is dropping the connection to the exchange
if it occurs more at certain times of day (congestion on local exchange)
if not check the local wiring, all other phone like, devices got microfilters fitted
try to get a couple of hours with all devices disconnected, a faulty phone can affect the connection, even with a microfilter
double check u ain't picked up a bug or spyware

i have two other wireless devices that never drop a connection, but this particular dongle drops it all the time, this isnt really a tried and tested configuration as when i was at uni i was using a different router

I had a similar problem with a new router and mine was due to interference from a video sender - changing the wireless channel solved the problem. Test it by disconnecting other wireless devices one at a time and see if this prevents the problem.

k that clears things up a bit, still no excuse to not check for bugs etc tho ;) (on all machines)
are the other devices closer to the router?, the point u made about signal strength is only valid on a meter, the pcs software etc will not notice a sudden break in signal strength as it cant monitor the adapter whilst ur using it
it could be a faulty adapter, if u have one on another pc try swapping them, using correct un install procedure, see if the problem moves to other machine

Get a Sweex dongle from Amazon, it's excellent!
#9
okay. ill install this dongle on the laptop that normally worked (that uses a netgear pc card) and see how i get on with that.

thanks for all the help so far

as for distance from the router, i'd say one of them was probably about the same distance away if not further, additionally i can connect to the network using my phone when im next to the computer.

my personnel opinion is that i need a new adapter, but as i dont know much my opinion means jack bleep

doesn't sound like the dongle mate, I remember fixing a problem like this a while back. What happens when you try to watch a youtube vid?
#12
well im watching one now and its working fine, but it did take ages to try and open it up
#13
Ah ok, doesn't sound like the same problem. This was a paging/buffering error
#14
I think it is the adapter because ive tried it in the laptop that normally works (when using another card) and the connection is now ****.

guess im looking for a new adapter
#15
easy peasy eh
#16
yep, i think so
