The dongle should be all you need (along with some software that will come with it)

I'd second that. You won't need anything else. Some dongles even have the software on the dongle, so you plug it in, let it sort itself out, enter payment details, and you're away! Be careful though - wireless dongles charge the earth if you exceed your lilmit - choose one that might offer you an early warning when you get near...

The dongle will connect to T-mobile wirelessly but you need to be sure you get a good signal where your desktop is as you cant move around like you can with a laptop,

You need to make sure you are talking about the right dongle here.

There are two main types of dongle.

1) A WIRELESS dongle thay makes your laptop/desktop a wireless device. This costs about £20 (with no other monthly charges) and that allows your desktop to connect to a router in your house to get to the internet.

2) A MOBILE BROADBAND dongle. This can be bought from any mobile phone company and is a self contained mobile internet device. There is a MONTHLY CHARGE for one of these, and it allows your laptop/desktop to connect to the interent when there is no other broadband/router available.

IF you already have a router connected to the interent all you need is 1 above, the wireless dongle, like this

If you are going to give your parents your desktop, and they have no internet, then you can buy them a Mobile Internet dongle and that will give them the internet.

This shows you mobile broadband from Vodafone (all the mobile suppliers do mobile broadband)

However if they already have a phone line into their house then they are far better getting broadband down the phone line as this will be faster and cheaper and more reliable than a mobile broadband dongle.

They can then connect the desktop to the broadband that come down the phone line with a wire.

I'm picking up a free local wifi signal that works great for the living room, but I want wireless connection to my desktop. I'm assuming a router won't work cause I have no landline. I do have a dongle I can use but I just can't pick up the signal in the room I need it in. If I buy a wifi extender is this all I will need.
