All advice gratefully received
BTW - if it makes any difference - I have wireless connection to my router and also from my desktop pc to the router. I just have no idea how to connect in printers. Actually - dont know how to send to the printer that is attached to the desktop from the laptop (or share files etc etc)

You need a USB Print server such as this:

Alternatively, you can buy a printer with the server built in such as the Canon Pixma ip5200R.
Ah ha. Thanks

any idea if I need this to be able to send from my laptop to my desktop wirelessly and so onto the printer that is cabled from the desktop?
OK. You would cable the print server into one of the network ports on your wirless router and attach the printer via usb to the print server. Assuming your desktop is connected to the router (either wired or unwired), you would then print via the router - print server - printer from either your desktop or your laptop. It means that your desktop doesn't need to be powered on to print from your laptop. (NOTE - I have assumed that your printer is a USB printer, if it is an old parallel printer you would need a parallel port print server).
