Wireless router question - Help me and win a prize :D

Had Virgin engineer come around today as my 20mb connection was irregular. He advised me that I should upgrade my wireless router to a 'N' one from 'g' as connection used by 1 wired and 3 wireless computers.

I enjoy gaming and streaming online videos. Flat mates are heavy downloaders.

I want to restrict my housemate to 3-4mb each of bandwidth speed off the 20mb internet connections and stop them from downloading during the day times (to avoid service being reduced from Virgin), but allow them normal browsing. Advised by Virgin Engineer to buy a 'N' router which have options to restrict bandwidth.

Router will be connected directly to the modem and NOT though any network computer. Installing software in every computer to restrict is not an option

I was looking at this

The person who can solve my problem (cheapest and simplist) will get a prize worth over £10.

So all my fellow HUKD members, I leave this now in your capable hands.

Regarding the prize, it is a surprise. However it will be brand new.

Still doesnt solve the problem. I need to restrict them during the days from the downloading and I have 3 other housemates which share the connection. I just want to give them 3-4mb speed each and increase it when I feel like.

I may be wrong here and things may have moved on from when I was told this but unless they and yourself have wireless N laptops then upgrading is pointless as the best connection you get will be that of your wireless card, probably g.

the router settings have timings and restrictions in place, you need to have a look.....

I would get this and then flash with DD-WRT

What the engineer mentioned that the free 'g' router from virgin is ok for 1-2 users. Because our internet is used a lot for heavy downloading and gaming the 'g' router cant handle all the load properly and therefore making the modem instable causing the speed to fluctuate between 16mb - 19.8 mb.

He recommended that a 'n' router are more versatile and able to handle the usage properly

The router you mentioned here is sold out currently. However, is this the cheapest 'n' router I can buy which will allow me flash with the DD-WRT software.

Cheers for the website. Learned something new.
