ok right guys, need an answer for transfer speed of files to usb.
dell desktop approx 5 years old
pentium 4 ht
3.4 ghz processor
1 gb ram
xp
transferred a film 1.5 gb from pc to usb and it took approx 20 mins, no other apps running and about 31 processes from task manager, transferred said film next day
from usb to neices laptop with vista and transfer was 90 secs.
dont actually recall xp going this slow but mainly use daughters laptop with windows 7 so maybe just cos comparing it to that.
so how long should it take approx with xp.

Hard Drive could be fragmented google: defraggler:
If the windows installation is 5 years old then it'll be far from optimistic.
That 1gb of ram is crippling you imo, machine I built for parents last year has a AMD Triple core and 4gb, nice and smooth and cost me £200+ish at the time.

I take it a new pc isn't on the cards?

USB 2.0 transfers at up to 30MB/s, USB 1.1 transfers at up to 1.5MBs. If it takes 90 seconds, that's about right for a USB 2.0 connection. If it takes around 25 minutes, that's right for a USB 1.1 connection. Unless your copy of XP isn't patched to accomodate USB 2.0 (which might be a possibility, if you've never installed any service packs or patches), it should go as fast as W7.

cheers, hard drive is fine, had to do a re format last year due to virus that locked me out of my machine, just seems sluggish at times with cpu usage between 0% & 75%. only use pc for certain things so not clog up daughters laptop, might do fresh install again (just laziness that stops me from doing it again)
