Yeah my heart bleeds for you instead of the staff that are loosing their jobs over Christmas.

As far as a con, it must be really easy to fake that much of a deficit in profits
#2
my local woolworths has very little at 50% off, most of the stuff is 10% - 20% off the same as last week and there were queues outside this morning.

This is a bargain site, we are here for the BARGAINS, yes the staff are felt for, but lighten up :)

I wouldn't say it's a con, no. It's advertised as up tp 50% off items, not 50% minimum off absolutely everything you can grab off our shelves.

And closing down sale doesn't mean that everything is available for pennies. It's still advertised as up to 50% off but they're just advertising the fact that they more than likely won't be there next month for anyone that was thinking of waiting until the Jan sales to try and pick up any sale items.

Can't see how that's a con myself :?

Wasn't me that threw me rattle because I couldn't find somthing for nothing when I followed the sheep into the car crash like closing down sale this morning :whistling:
#6
You'll notice, as in all sales, it says "up to" which can meaning anything up to the stated percentage. People see 50% off and think that's what it means! :)

Sorry, but is that suppose to make sense to me?

my guess is that the staff knew about the closure of woolies before the public did..
anyhow the staff have more than enough time to find other jobs.

its not like woolies are going to close over night.
they will milk this for as long as they can to get people in buying stuff they dont need.
#9
went in to our woolies today and nothing has changed since the last week..up to 50% off...up to being the key words!!i loved woolies you could get a tin opener,a birthday card and a pressie and some sweets..i go in all the time for stuff......they will be missed and i feel for the staff............but this is total **** they are STILL more expensive than elsewere on dvds/cds/games/sweets/toys/clothes................some things are were cheaper last month in the 3 for 2.......and yet people still queue to the back of the shop muttering "everything is half price"..read the advert you ****s...........i picked up HSM knix for my dd and some pens but honestly couldnt face the queue for 20% off an £8 spend....and there is no way they will put games/dvds and consoles into a closing down sale..they will be on a lorry long before the store shuts

Correct! But i'm happy to sit and watch for your waffling reply, to explain things :)

Passed through on the way back to the car this morning. very little reduced by 50% Was quite amusing though when there was a frantic sounding voice over the tannoy reminding people that not all stock was 50% off....and then to see everyone emptying their bulging baskets
Poor woolies ( and staff)
#13
I don't know what people really expected, the day of the 'Sale' ended long ago. Just about every shop in the hight street has 'sale' signs up all year round. I think we should do the same as the French where sales have to be honest reductions on overstock/clearance products BY LAW and they're only allowed about 2 weeks of the year.
#14
A lot of complaints about the 'sale' on the news.. I think the staff have got more to complain about though.. I think it will be sad to walk down the high street and not see a woolies..

My mum worked for the store in Ludlow when she was in her twenties. She had to have a serious operation while she worked their and they sent her a hamper every week until she was better.. I know you wouldn't get it now but she has fond memories of working for Woolworths as does many others..

i wnt this morning and they never really had much of a sale on most things 10% or 20% off.

Let me break it down...

The OP was having a rather selfish moan that Woolies were not giving away anything.

Sheep referring to the hapless followers of the news that a big sale is on.

Car Crash becuase its irresistable temptation to gawk at (in this case go to) like a Car Crash.

Enough waffle for you?
[mod]#17
It all could have been free...........people on here would still moan though......it's what they do best. :-D

Dont think its a con as much as customer expectations based on recent announcements. Whenever its mentioned that a business has gone down the drain people immediately think "oh good sales, items for next to nothing!" , and I'd agree with them.

Problem is that this isnt how it works, the Administrators wont put things like Consoles, TVs and items alike down by 50% as its obvious that they will get more for them so they knock a tenner or 5% or something reasonable off the price.

What you'll prob find at a 50% knockdown price is items like Christmas Cards, Decorations, notepads....carp basically, this allows them to legally advertise a sale of up to 50% to get customers attention. Other items like Toys is where you will prob get the best deals as its that class of items that have the most competitive prices at this time of year.

At the end of the day, Woolies are just trying to recoup as much cash as possible from their stock....its not a stock giveaway like most of us think.

Oh, and this isnt based on my own experience, its what I heard on the radio early this morning before I decided to go out :p

As for the staff redundancies, yes it is always sad to hear of redundancies (having been made redundant myself in the last couple of months) but using that as an excuse to cloud any debate on sales or deals is also pretty sad itself. The purpose of this sites existence is based on communicating where the deals and sales are to be had, regardless of how those sale circumstances arose. If anyone wants to start a sympathy thread then feel free to start their own and people will positively and constructively contribute to it, but its pretty pointless trying to spoil other peoples threads when they are legitimately contributing to the HUKD community positively.

Happy Hunting in the Sales people!

I wasn't starting a sympathy thread my point was tongue in cheek that the OP thought they were incredibly hard done by and comparatively they aren't

Agreed. They werent hard done by. :)

thought the sale was junk, only 10-20% off anything which still did not make the prices as good as what you can get online.
personally wait until new year and prices *should* come right down
at the moment it is marketing lead to clear stock as soon as possible as no one wants stuff to try and sell in January

lol, its nothing to do with Woolworth's anymore, the administrators are in charge and can do what they want to recoup the money owned in stock and estates, its not a sale to benefit the public its to shift any stock quickly to empty the premises.

Exactly. They have to recoup as much as they can, not give the stuff away.

Well it's a pain having to drive to Canterbury Aldi for a loaf of (sub 50p) bread  Might as well have something useful in place of Woolies ;-)

I hope that Netto buys our Woolworths, far more use, Woolworth lost it's way years ago.

If they did, would you notice? It would still look like a jumble sale

i cant believe the amount of people suckered in by the sale,
a person i know who's a lorry driver has loads of overtime at work due to moving all decent items from woolworths stores as they WILL NEVER BE AT A SILLY REDUCED PRICE,
it's all a scam & when you look at the sale prices 10% off etc you will see that this also accounts for the 2.5% vat reduction, which means 7.5% off,
anything that is on sale at woolies i guarantee if you shop round you could buy a lot cheaper,
try asda & tesco etc.
ps try taking your items back & you'll find they will not issue refunds,
