Dont forget to use your friends & family voucher whilst they are still trading - they apparently wont be getting any more stock. When its gone its gone!

Website has had all toys/clothes taken off - just cds, video games and dvds left.

Will all the stores be reducing their toys?

at my local store (PETERLEE) they give everyone a friends and family discount voucher - 20% off toys and 10% off games, dvds, cds etc, valid until thursday. don't know if this is happening all over.

I agree. They seem to have been around for ever - as long as I can remember. They will be missed on the High Street. Yet another victim of the credit crunch, I guess. I feel so sorry for the families who face losing their jobs.:-(

Isnt Woolworths owned by a group (DSG?) I cant see how theres not been no effort into restructure prior to this, is it gonna have a knock on effect to other chains within that group?

Morning big man

They used to be part of the Kingfisher group when I worked there (about 8 years ago) with B&Q, Comet, Superdrug and a couple of other smaller companies. Think they're all on their own though now.

The Woolworths in my city centre has been a bit grubby for a while.

Barely any DVD's or Games and seemingly nothing but cheap toys and kitchen appliances. Half the stuff looks broken or the boxes scuffed.

It's a pity as it used to be a nice shop.

Corporate office press release:

Statement re Suspension Further to the announcement of 19 November 2008, the Board of Woolworths Group plc confirms that it remains in discussions relating to the potential sale of its retail business.

The Board also notes recent press speculation in relation to the possible sale of its 40% interest in the 2 Entertain joint venture with BBC Worldwide. The Board can confirm that it is in discussions regarding a possible sale of that interest to BBC Worldwide.

Whilst discussions in relation to such sales are being pursued with vigour, terms have not yet been agreed. Both sales are subject, amongst other things, to the approval of the Group's lending banks. Accordingly, there can be no assurance that a sale of the Group's retail business or of its interest in 2 Entertain will be concluded.

Pending the outcome of these discussions and the consequent impact on the Company's financial position, the Company has requested a suspension of the trading of its shares on the London Stock Exchange.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

Can believe how dumb my missus is!

I sent here out earlier with one of those vouchers to see if there were any toy bargains for the kids - and get the additional 20% off! She's just come back with a Wii lego star wars/clone wars game with a 10% reduction and still costing more than it is at Play. (Which was the just place I looked!) And probably no warrenty if it dont work (They'll probably be gone forever before Xmas!)

I'll be gutted with no more Woolies in my hometown. I know that some of there stuff is really overpriced....games..etc...but some of there offers were brill and the kids love it. I really feel for all those people facing the prospect of losing there jobs, it couldn't possibly happen at a worse time of year. It must be made even worse with the amount of people they no doubt have going in asking when there closing/cutting prices etc...

Just got back from my local store and they are further reducing stock.

Manager is running around like a headless chicken telling staff to fill gaps with whatever is left in stock room.
Many DVD's, games and CDs have out of stock labels on them and we are the nearest store to one of their 3 distribution centres.

Will go back tomorrow and see if they have reduced the lego

Remember those Saturday afternoons trying to nick a sweetie from the pick 'n' mix...................those were the days..........................

Do you think that's why they've went bust!!!(guilt, guilt, guilt)

They are one of the cheapest places for chart DVD's but only ever have a handful in stock.

Pity as this means one less highstreet store so less competitive pricing and worse deals for us.

I love woolies, the great thing about them is they are in the highstreet not in an out of down complex, we have 2 little girls and always find cloths and toys for them there. Still I am going in tomorrow for a last farewell and try and spot a few bargains. I hope a new woolies rises from the ashes I hear they could save about 200 stores, I hope ours is one of them.
