Work dilemma

Ok, so I graduate next month and I have a graduate job secured for July too.

I have worked at a small independent newsagents at weekends since I was 16, and get on very well with my boss. I am leaving next Saturday so I was wondering is do I get him a gift? A card? What? Or do I expect something from him?

If I should get him something any suggestions?

Just give him your paper round bag back

Firstly, well done for getting a grad job secured already. If I were you and got on with my boss, I would get him something. Maybe a bottle of wine (although maybe not if he works in/owns a newsagent)! Nothing extravagant - £10-15 perhaps, but just a gesture would be nice.

I was thinking a bottle of wine but mates and parents told me I should be receiving a gift not getting them one ... Hmmm

maybe you will get a gift, or maybe not, but get him something anyway and a card saying thanks. Makes the world a nicer place.

I think a nice card telling the boss how you have enjoyed the work and thanking him for being a good guy is fine. If you get a present and he as not, then he will feel bad, and if you like him that may make you feel bad!

Not necessarily. Most often you get a gift if you're part of a team (the whole passing round an envelope thing)! The nice thing to do would to get a small gift but it's up to you!

I'm all confused now! Lol, I think a card is a definite but you are right if I get a present and he doesn't it will be awkward :D

Maybe its just me but why would an employee buy their employer a gift when they are the ones leaving? Surely it is normally the other way around or is it another "the person whos birthday it is buys the cakes" tradition that makes no sense?

sounds like the op is female? They started the whole buying the teacher a present at end of term so this doesn't surprise me.

I think a card will suffice.

Haha I've never understood this either.
Yes it should be the employer getting you a gift not the other way around. A card would be a nice gesture though.

True, but I am unsure that's why I asked the question in the beginning! :D

except that having employed you since age 16 you now head off to brighter prospects without buying him a bottle he might think you ungrateful! I've had ordinary jobs for ordinary companies, and i don't buy my employer anything when i leave, but the littler ones who i feel have done me a favour always get something small, just so they know i appreciated it :) It sounds like this guy has been good with you - considering you were only an inexperienced teen when you started, buy him a bottle and don't expect anything back! He's given you enough!
