The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns.

Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them. Our goal is to keep usable items out of landfills. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process.

There are now 578 Groups spread across the country, with 3,520,413 members!

How does Freecycle work?
Everything posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. When you want to OFFER something - whether it's a chair, fax machine, piano or an old door, simply send an email to your group. After that it is up to the giver to decide who receives the gift from the responses only they receive and to set up a collection time, and finally post an item TAKEN message.

Maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Post a WANTED message and a group member may just have what you're looking for. Alert the group with a follow-up RECEIVED message.

No fault of its intended aim but it also has an element of people who resell items on for profit

Freecycle used to be good, it is now full of scavengers.

Second, that.

Requests for smartphones and laptops constantly appeared on the local groups I was a member of. Got more wanted emails than anything else. The audacity of some people had me in stitches, ended up leaving and decided to join another site for my unwanted junk......a refuse site.

I got a Boxed SNES, N64 & Saturn and 40 boxed SNES Games, 20 Boxed N64 Games & 8 Saturn Games, all mint like new and worth a fortune, about 3-4 years ago... never had anything decent since.

a good sob story works wonders too.

freecycle is spoiled by the people who cry about it if you sell the junk you have been kind enough to remove for them at no cost

Thanks OP for the promo for freecycle. As you may tell by my avatar I am a keen fan of freecycle and run our local group.

Selling on is permitted as its still keeping the items out of landfill, however its poor etiquette to claim its for your own use when requesting then to sell the item straight on, however if this is an issue you experience let your admin/mods know (contact details on your groups homepage) and some will warn said members on first occasion and remove them for any repeat, the same with no shows (repeated offences get you removed).

This is only on groups where admin actually care about their group and its members (which is about 90% IMO). There are groups where they are run by admin who just want first dibs on offered items but these are fortunately rare. The group I admin has over 18000 members, and around 120 offered messages per week, the last time I had something from freecycle was about 6 months ago.

Taking the items with intentions of resale ok if you say so but the deceit and lies involved that some people message is a joke. Use to see many of the items i gave away appear on ebay.

Freecycle is ruined by the lies not people speaking out.

more fool you then if you gave away something worth selling on ebay, oh wait, you decided it wasn't worth your while, so well done them for getting off their backsides and turning what you considered low/no value junk into profit

I gave something away as someone posted a please please BS begging I'm hardup wanted message and I thought 'I've got one of those that I don't need anymore so why not'. Lying deceitful messages and requests is not exactly deserving of a pat on the pat for getting of their backside to make a few quid. Thieving liars that's all they are.

I have, where possible, always sold my unwanted items of value but its those odd items that someone may just need, you know power lead or power pack or some furniture, I have offered away. I now would much rather use the refuse site who in turn recycle items and donate profits to local support groups.

so you;re upset because someone sold an old power lead you gave them oO

if anything the refuse site is better for the resellers, they go up there countless times a day and get loads from different people

ps I got banned from Bristol freectcle when someone said they were looking for a digital camera, I replied saying have you tried looking in a shop X)

No odd junk / cables is fine its the messages for furniture and other higher value items that got my back up.

The refuse site here asks for donations for items that can be resold otherwise it gets loaded in a truck and off to the 'car boot' type markets locally. The chaps at the locals aren't fools and they spot the traders a mile off. The council and contractor have got it perfectly setup with actual recycle rates fluttering around 70% IIRC.

must admit I used it years ago but gave things away. every time they apparently didn't own a car so I ended up delivering. stopped doing it but might look again.

Freecycle and Freegle are still OK.

I recently picked up an all in one printer, scanner, copier along with working ink and extra inks on top, they also delivered it to my door for free. Can't get any better than that.

I only advertised once and within 2 days I had the offer.

I also give to the community, the recent ones I have been giving away the free sim cards with credit that I received through HUKD, they were no good to me as as I originally claimed them for my daughter but she had no use for them apparently, so I gave them back to the community and the people loved them, had an email recently thanking me for the sim card that they collected a few months ago as it came in very handy for them.

But over the years I have gave away furniture and PC parts. If they go to a genuine home or to someone to resell then that is up to them, as long as they get moved on instead of filling up landfill.

here the sites let you take anything you want for free but restrict how long you can stay to about 15mins, they have a sign up saying items can't be resold but tbh they are happy just to see the stuff gone

I just set a filter up in ymail to direct all freecycle emails straight to their own folder for archiving and backup, reason being yahoo are crippling yahoo groups functionality and making it harder to keep tabs on people who post repeat/multiple wanted requests, the old system made it simple to search previous posts now its a damned mess.

The official freecycle guidelines suggest a 1 wanted per month request per member, we have it at one per fortnight (unless its a genuine charity/cause such as women's aid), however you aren't getting past me by simply saying its for a charity I do request an official contact to very with the organisation that they are genuine, something the genuine ones have no problem or issues with supplying and are actually quite pleased I do.
