That is a bit worrying, why do copiers need hard drives anyway? And why do they need to store images of anything being copied to it?

arghh ... ( thinks of old printers ditched)

Didnt realise that. Yes worrying. Thinking of how many corner shops offer photocopying as an extra. Would have been less likely to use them if I had known this.

Yeah, it's definitely worrying.

I photocopied a few documents the other day at my voluntary placement, including mine and my daughters passports, utility bills and bank statements.

copiers need hard drives for various reasons
1. its handy sometimes to have a copy of everything done
2. software can be installed on photocopiers to enable extra features, this software can be installed to a sd card but its better it goes to a hard drive
3. logging - for billing these logs have to live somewhere and a hard drive is perfect.

its why u should never just turn off a copier as it will damage the hard drive, power them down nicely

for an example of what software can run on a copier have a look for https://www.ricoh.com/esa/index.html applications such as:
http://www.selectec.co.uk/products/papercut-print-control-management/papercut-mf/tracking-photocopiers-and-multi-function-printers/ricoh-mfd-integration/
http://www.selectec.co.uk/products/billboard/

most copier companies have an embedded system but some close it down (yes u canon *****)

Think I would be more inclined to just turn off copiers in future then if thats more likely to erase the info. Cant believe this has been unknown about for so long.
