Not many goals and 40% down on germany 06

Vuvuzela's

The Jabulani ball

Stewards on strike

Empty stadiums

Transport problems getting to the grounds

ITV HD fiasco

ITV's general coverage and pundits

Anything else?

Agreed. It's been pants...... but better to be there than not I guess.
#5
It'll take off (like the new ball) at a later stage.

Unfortuantely just like the ECL most teams priority is not to lose rather than to win. This leads to no one sticking their neck out for the first 30 minutes and both teams hanging on for the last 30 minutes.
#6
I think the Vuvuzela should count twice.

I Agree with OP on this...

This world cup has been disappointing so far...The standard of football has just been soo disappointing. It seems as all teams have taken on the mentality of not losing a game rather than going out to win the game!

Lets just hope that the games get better now as the first games tend to be tight anyways!

ITV are the worse to be honest...hate their commentators, had their pre/post match analysis! And the England game fiesco...well that just sums ITV up for me!

The vuvuzela's i can live with (brings a bit of african tradition to the world cup)

But this new ball just doesnt seem rite!

Algeria/Slovenia stadium was pretty empty.

I think first round matches like others have said teams are looking not to lose, it should open up soon enough when teams need to win.

Vuvuzelas arent really annoying me that much now, in yesterdays Brazil match they werent too bad and when Maicon scored they were actually used properly....not just for constant 90mins lol

As for the ball I think they should just get on with it, we are seeing more shots from outside the box and I think we will see some awesome long goals and volleys soon enough
#10
Early doors and 1st match nerves...it will pick up starting tonight with South Africa's 2nd group game...bbbbbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
#11
there's so much hype leading up to it that the early (not so good games) seem like such a letdown... should get better
#12
Maybe some sort of reward for scoring first or shots on target would encourage teams to be a bit more interested from the first whistle.

Let's hope so. It will only take off if england do well though.

I think everyone was really looking forward to it but now it's here, it doesn't have the normal exciting feel about it.

Maybe being a blue nose i'm always negative ........ :whistling:

Large gaps though,mentioned in commentary but no explanation given

All the 1st group games in world cups tend to be poor...

As DarloNige said it will pick up.
#16
can anyone else envisage us losing the next game and forgetting about the last one and just coming home?? i can !!!!

Why is it - whenever we go to the world cup - we take the wrog players and those we do take end up getting injured either before the first game or during the first one !!!

We have to give up all hope of ever winning it again !
#17
Considering the game is only 2 days away there seems a vastly reduced interest in the England game from the first one.

I think the realisation has already set in with some people that this is going to be like all previous attempts, fruitless.

Fault of the media. So much pressure that players are afraid of making mistakes and happy to just hold the fort rather than push forward and get out of position. Will definitely pick up later on, it will have to once the big teams face each other.

Media pressure hasnt affected Rob Green though, he seems quite happy to still make mistakes.

As for the rest of the stuff.

I like the Vuvuzelas.
Stadiums dont seem empty and if they are the vuvuzelas make up for this.
ITV messed up on one goal which isnt even important. Is this the first World Cup to be broadcast in HD? That is pretty good.

Pundits are poor but thats been the same for the last 3 World Cups.

The ball is just something to blame when they f**k up.

Personally, I think this World Cup is pretty good. I like the fact that some of the underdogs are capable of beating some of the favourites. Unpredictable is good. On a random note, has anybody been playing that Picklive game? It gets you through the meaningless matches of the tournament.
#20
I think other teams who want to play defensive football could learn from N. Korea: defensive, but smart counter attacking football.

Hopefully it'll spur other nations on. Have to say that the ball does appear to be having an effect. At first i thought it was excuses, but the majority of players seem to be having issues.

My worry is that the USA v Slovenia match is a draw and we beat Algeria.

The US then beat Algeria needing us to get a win against Slovenia.

Anyone know what happens in the scenario

USA, England and Slovenia all draw against each other but all beat Algeria. If the goal difference is the same who goes through the two with the highest goals scored?

Edit:

For the World Cup tournament, FIFA uses the following criteria to rank teams in the Group Stage.[68]

greatest number of points in all group matches;
goal difference in all group matches;
greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
greatest number of points in matches between tied teams;
goal difference in matches between tied teams;
greatest number of goals scored in matches between tied teams;
drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

eh? :thinking:

England fans have been waiting 4 years to see england play in the biggest sporting tournament in the world and for ITV to switch to a hyundai car advert as england score their first goal of the tournament was disgraceful !!!!
#23
Everyone seems to foget that most teams want to keep it tight in their first game, and be still in with a chance of going through in their last group game. It's been the same with every world cup/ euro championship I've seen, we all seem to look back on past tournaments with rose tinted glasses, remembering how great they were, well in all honesty most of them are pretty pants until the last game of the group.

argentina and germany were good

biggest dissapointment for me sofar was brazil, they played horribly for the first 70 mins, it was the worst football ive watched for a while and im a liverpool fan :w00t:

hopefully spain will put on a show this afternoon

Way too early to be making statements like that. I think the country is just on a come down from a poor performance from our boys. Let's see how the matches are over the next few days.

I for one would happily have an awful group stages as long as the knock out rounds were exciting. That's what we remember more at the end of it all.

England would go through using the standard alpha system :x

Totally agree, if Engerrrrland had gone out and thrashed USA 4-1, then the whold of the British media, and most English fans would be proclaiming this the best world cup in recent memory.

they did play pretty poor and first goal was a fluke, why the hell were the pundits saying he meant to score...he looked up across the box and was looking to drive it in, hit wrong part of his foot and all of a sudden its a 'brilliant brazilian goal'.

North Korea FTW would be awesome if they beat Ivory Coast or Portugal

Thought Brazil played an ok match. They dominated throughout but forced into shooting wildly from distance by a well oiled NK defence. Saw some nice touches and runs and the goals were very good too.

As the first game, against awkward opposition I see no need to worry if I were a Brazil fan!

Yeah was poor coverage but like I said its one goal. If we go onto win it which is highly unlikely do you still see peole complaining about this? Really isnt that important. If it happened at the business end of the tournament then maybe people would have something to cry about.

Like I said, pick the positives. This is the first World Cup in HD? Even if the games are poor it still looks good :)

I think it was a US conspiracy. Getting us back for BP. Sneaky Yanks!!

i know, it was blatantly a cross gone wrong, i reckon if NK play the way they did last night and Portugal and the IC play they way they did, the koreans have a chance :lol:

I thought he meant it purely on the amount of wellie he put behind it, it was hit with far too much force to be a pull back IMO. Yes he looked up but probably saw Robhino and thought what's the point I'm better off on my own.
#37
Brazils second goal was good though perfectly weighted pass and cool finish
#38
ITV coverage and stupid horns are the bits that bother me. They have 2 advertisement breaks at half time, like a smoker at the airport... "I wont be able to have a smoke for 45 minutes so I'll have 2 now"

As for the stupid horns, on and off would be ok, or even used to celebrate goals, but the constant buzz makes me cry inside :cry:

the keeper wasnt even off his line that much, it literally went in the only gap it could have done, IMO it was lucky, when you are running at that pace down the line trying to catch up with the ball about to go out you dont have much control, no way he meant it. But hey thats just my opinion.

also driving it into the box low and hard it could have gone anywhere, Korean player could have stuck a foot onto it and put it into their own back net I think thats what he was trying to do.

but brazil are the one team you think you can expect to play beautifull smooth attacking football, allways going forward, the spent most of the game standing still and passing back, there was hardly any movement. Was uber dissapointing

Its a sad thing when Italy looked like more of an attacking threat than Brazil :lol:
