I'm a train driver. Yes we get paid the amounts quoted, but we can be working different shifts everyday, some days starting at 3am, some days finishing at 3am. You could go days without seeing your family properly. I can have 1000 passengers on my train at any given time and their safety is my responsibility. I won't start about the possibility of someone deciding to use my train as the instrument to end their life by standing in front of me while I'm coming down the track at 110mph.......

As one passenger once said to me, "I'd rather the driver of my train in the morning was well paid, well rested and free of stress......rather than someone who is worried about money and tired......my life is in their hands."

Do you have to bring you own scraper for the suicides?
Thats one reason they get paid so well.

Maybe driverless trains would solve that problem.

Can`t see the unions being to happy with those, also another reason train drivers are so well paid.

I suppose the high wage is because the economy is collapsing and brexit is to blame! X)

I guess train drivers must be smarter than pilots if they worked out they get paid more without having to pay anything towards career training. Fair play to them. I always say think those who moan about what someone else is getting paid should get off their backside and apply for that position they are so jealous about.

No idea where you've got teachers having an average of £37k per year. Way less than that.

When I was a lad I wanted to be a train driver when I grew up, thanks to Casey Jones.

You don't exactly have to steer. Go when it's green. Stop when it's red. Deal with the odd suicide-by-train incident. Not a bad wage really.

sure i saw a thing in paper few days back (yeah.. an article (_;) )
think virgin were recruiting 90 drivers, 200 applicants per job, 1 years training before being let loose

15,000 people applied for 78 jobs starting in 2018 to drive a new generation of Azuma trains on the east coast mainline. ScotRail was recently inundated by more than 22,000 applications for 100 train driver jobs.

Incredible wages. Spoke to a train driver who I was buying a car off. His colleague had 9 months paid time off work for a suicide. Said it can be that traumatic...

It is not a case of how well that they are paid as their take home pay (after stoppages and they get caught by 40% tax band too) but how others are not paid enough by their employers especially in the public sector.
.
Then need to factor in unsocial hours, shifts and weekends/holidays.
.
As for comparison with teachers you need to compare with independent schools and they are comparable with train drivers, as effectively you can have an entire school on a train https://slwi7144fhb3skz422v5djm1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Independent-Schools-%E2%80%93-IAPS-Guide-to-Salaries-2015.pdf
.
And if you compare a train driver with a first line manager in a professional firm then a train driver has more responsibility and carry more people than a first line manager whose pay is average £50-£60k.

Would have been better if they'd have said 14 weeks away from their place of work.

How much time off did the Fire and Ambulance crews get for the cleanup? Sod all I bet and they earn less.
Hello, is that my union rep? Oh, good how long can I string a trauma out? Great, I'll multiply it by 9, should be safe enough.

Well they do stop all the low paid pilots running red lights andhitting each other.

Crucially, above the Project Envy, as can be seen from Virgin Train job vacancies recently, it is 200 applicants for each job, so it is not easy to beat the other 199 applicants for each job vacancy, why are you better than the other 199 applicants if it were to be easy money.

An old roster from a train driver I used to know. It's not easy getting up at 02.30 to go to work.

'I heard' there is an awful lot of reading and learning involved. I don't think it's a walk in the park.

I heard that this is the train driver's rule book that he has to learn
