  TBF the system is so s*** you have to do what you can. Even living rough on the streets doesn't guarantee you a house.

  House market was very different back then. So is the employment market. If you've been able to pay your mortgage, you've been extremely lucky. The house market, both buying and renting, has been destroyed by the buy to let losers.
  
  If they're single, they're not a priority housing need anyway, unless they have kids, or are from a foreign country.

  Lucky??? Or perhaps just hard graft and not sitting on his backside claiming. We have friends who lost their jobs - one in particular was in an extremely well paid job but took a lower paid job as that ensured her mortgage/bills etc were being paid.

  
  If she had to take a lower paid job, she wasn't worth her salt anyway. And many people get a mortgage commensurate with their wages, so a lower paid job wouldn't help.
  
  Funny how people think you can get a job easily these days. Would be interesting to see some of them made redundant.
