Youd be able to watch and record a single channel, but most of the features of sky plus wouldnt work.

If you want to record using your sky+ without paying for any channel subscriptions, it'll still cost you £10 to activate it. Total rip off - but there you go.

Hmmm
I have a sky+HD box and subscribe. (It operated in 2 rooms via a magic eye). I was going to chat up my friendly installer for an old sky+ box for another room to record only the free to view stuff but does that mean I'd have to pay another tener a month for a separate subscription for the privilege?
I assume from Guv post above its monthly??

You will need another feed (two if you want to record/watch) from your satellite dish and Sky Multi-room. The feed won't work through RF-out to another Sky box and allow recording, it will need a feed directly from the dish as Sky boxes have no RF-in.

So you will be paying about £10 a month for the Multi-Room feature, buying a Sky+ box and possibly being charged to upgrade the LNB on the dish to allow 4 feeds. Would be cheaper to get a Freeview box with recording capabilities.

I have a quad LNB and already use a second hand sky box for free to view channels but would like to upgrade it to + for recording facility.
I am not prepared to subscribe to multiroom.
I need to know if I must subscribe to use the record facility

Sky seem to exclude it - From their website
Quote"Sky+: One £99 Sky+ box per household and not available if you already have Sky+/SkyHD/Sky+HD box. Sky+ can store an average of 40 hours of programmes."

However, how would they know? I could get the card in another name/address.

Unless you subscribe it just won't work. The record facilities are turned on and off by subscription. The only way around the subscription is by using specific satellite boxes that can be patched to bypass the security feature.

Unfortunately I do not know enough about that though (whether it still even works) to comment any further, although Google should offer further reading.

Even if a valid fully packaged card was inserted into a Sky+ box - it still wouldnt work to record. The card needs to be "paired" with the box to unlock the recording.

However, if you are paying for multi-room, this would suffice. look at it instead of paying £10 to use the recorder, you've paid it to record AND have all the channels in another room.

Thanks guys and repped. I dunno if it's worth £120 per annum for multiroom I already pay £120 for the HD. I think Rupert is getting enough! Mrs oxter would like to play back her cookery progs (UKTV food) in the kitchen and stop and start them to follow the recipes so would have been handy (but not £120 handy).
However I have another cunning plan. How difficult is it to download the recorded progs to a PC which could be played back in the kitchen? What connectors would I need and how is it done please?

You cant do it (at least not easily.) Maybe they are on sky player (if not - buy her a cookery book!):p

If the shows are on a free channel, you would be able to view if the TVs are connected via RF. It doesnt sound like they are though.

Well you can do it easily but not directly from the sky+ to the PC. Easiest way would be to get a basic DVD recorder and dub them to that overnight.

Thanks guys
Apparently this gadget does the trick but signal won't be HD and audio will be mono. I could live with that for occasional viewing
