At 6pm BST Steve Jobs will kick off the 2010 World Wide Developers Conference--one of Apple's premiere events. Given the drama of this year's leaks, what new things can we expect to learn from Steve?

UPDATE:

Apple has unleashed iPhone 4. Coming June 24th.

http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/specs.html

iOS4 coming to iPhone and iPod touch June 21st.

Dont be too sure of the Gizmodo iPhone, it can change as it was a prototype. Im getting the new iPhone

Same here. WIll be picking up the new iPhone when its available.

Ive been wondering about the networks and who's going to offer it and for what price.

O2, Orange, Vodafone, Tesco and probably 3 will have the new iPhone available from Launch date. Will be huge, and this is where the other 3 networks will be throwing incentives for you to come to them for this phone.

When Orange, then Tesco, then Vodafone all got the 3GS, the phone was already out. They knew fine well that there would be no point offering the iPhone for cheaper than O2 since the core majority would of got it from O2 in the first place as soon as it launched.

The only advantage they could of swung in their favour was when the original 3G buyers contracts all ended in January 2010. Even then, those contracts were the dedicated Apple fans. Those Apple fans would of been clued up to the fact that a new iPhone was going to be coming again (as it has done every year) at WWDC. Right again, theres no incentive for the networks to really offer anything.

With this launch, each of the networks will definetly have a close eye on each other. This is the first big chance for one of the networks to undercut the others.

Looking at O2's launch prices for the 3GS.

http://media.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/news/26234/IPhone02x535.jpg

It was £45 a month with £90 up front for the 16GB 3GS.

Currently its sitting at £40 a month with £89 up front for the same phone.

I seriously think that one network will offer the new iPhone for £50 on a £45 a month contract and £90 on a £35 a month contract. Dont get me wrong, these prices would be cheap compared to the 3GS current pricing, but the network I reckon who will do it?

Vodafone.

They've recently pulled out charges and data allowances on their current smart phone contracts. 1GB a month and big charges for those who go over it. They can easily make their money back through that. Through tethering as well. It would be a massive income for them there.

Would O2 do it? I doubt it. The exclusivity of the iPhone for the last 3 years has been massive for them. They will have built up a core following from the first iPhone, (even then, if you had been in a 18 month contract for less than 6 months, they were offering to cancel your contract for free if you took the new iPhone), then with the generous pricing for the 3G with the price subsidised. They took the mickey with the 3GS a bit, but they knew they could do it. They were the only network offering the phone (except for a few T-Mobile customers managing to get the 3GS if they stunk up a big enough fuss during retentions (and even at that, it was for the business customers spending £70-£90 a month on their contracts)).

Tesco - Could offer a good deal. More likely to offer the iPhone cheaper than the others if you buy a TV or some rubbish.

Orange - Orange always seem to be right in the middle. They seem to just follow the crowd and none of their deals ever stand out. They dont have many exclusives anymore. O2 are the ones lapping up all the exclusives...Then again, maybe its time for Orange to step up to the plate and offer something out of this world.

3 - Doubt it. This network has so many dropped calls for those on any other kind of phone. Their 3G coverage is superb (when you can actually get it). IIRC, when you cant get a 3G signal, they piggyback on one of the other networks (apologises in advance if im wrong, but im sure I read that somewhere). Not the strongest of the networks, but actually are held in high regard from Ofcom who look upon 3 as a small network who have to be given the chance and not to be stepped upon from the big boys that are O2 and Vodafone.

To summarise, these are my ramblings. One network will steal the show when pre-orders are available.

But every network will be on their toes when it comes to announcing their prices. They need to look at the fact that they have several hundred thousand people who were on 3G contracts with O2 looking to get this new phone. Its a buyers market and the networks will have to remember that!

Im just buying one on pay & go, ( still in two minds desire or iphone HD ) Couldn't be done with being stuck on an overpriced tariff where i get more on p&g unlimited calls, txts, internet all for £15 pm imo

Heres hoping the iPhone HD will be around the £300-400 mark for the 8-16GB version ( hopeful )

Love him or hate him... Steve Jobs gives the best keynotes in the business, always look forward to WWDC

Hoping to see if there is any surprizes for the new iPhone - as so many details have already been leaked.

Going to take something special to tempt me away from my HTC Desire

It's not like people are buying an unknown - you know you're getting access to thousands of apps, a great UI, great battery life, good aesthetics etc.

And muppets is wrong - the usual term is sheep.

Some news if you want the 4g on PAYG starting price could be £550 to £600 for the 4G 32gb

Scrapping the 16 and 32 3gs and having a new 8gb 3gs entry level model.Might be wrong but there's a few websites with the same story.

http://www.u.tv/Business/The-new-iPh...4-896e357e7d42

We'll know by the end of the week I guess, but if its anywhere near that I'm off to get a Desire, no phones worth that much and (hopefully) even Apple will that that price as a none starter ! (but you never know)...

One more time.

I'm trying to get a word with the guys in the finance dept of the network I work for to see if they have any 'insights' as that's not the pricing they 'thought' was going to to be used...
#13
any more than £500 then it better be worth it, i understand that no phone should be that expensive thats why im looking at some alternatives now. However they may not drop 3gs prices as its fully compatible with the os4; well that could change later
#14
The info I'd been working on was that the 4G would come in at the 3GS price point and everything else would drop one stage with the first gen models being dropped as they're all out of stock in the US and the networks over there are saying they don't if they'll get any more. . .

I hope so but with Multiple carriers here creating more competition then it maybe true. TBH i want a decent £30 contract for 12/18M with no more than £100 start up. If not then Pay as you go for me
#16
The thing is as well. Would a 2 year contract be worth it here?

Look at the 3G. Its managed to hold its ground just fine and thats 2 years up. Obviously the phone is being discontinued now, but it does show you it could keep going.

If you got an 18 month contract anyway, you'd be finishing it around January 2012 and with a newer iPhone coming in that Summer, you'd be holding off for it anyway

Well i feel this new release has major changes/new features compared to the release of the 3gs to 3g. When the 3gs came out i didnt bother as there was little difference therefore i feel a 2yrs contract would be fine in terms of the device being continued.

I'm looking forward to this, a stream would be great, but I'm unsure that there is one around...

I'm hoping that the costs won't be over £500, I'll be selling my 3G 8gb and buying the iPhone outright if it's no more than £500 and stick to the sim-only tariff at £20 a month.

Role on 6PM!!!

Apple dont do live stream, go to macrumours or engadget for a live stream in Pics and Texts(Still exciting) at 6pm. Remember o2 and others last year did free internet on pay as you go iphones with the included sim so just get a bolt-on or similar for like £10 to get mins and texts

Tell me about it, i'm not denying I'm a muppet. As a graphic designer I have been using a mac for years an iPhone makes a great mac companion, im in need of a new phone and just can't get excited about this google android business.

You can't get excited about being able to actually change a lot of how the software on the phone operates, looks and feels without voiding your warranty (unlike the iPhone)? Not to mention having full control of apps running in the background. I've got an iPhone 3GS, had the iPhone 1G before it but really regret my decision and will be going for either HTC Evo or G1 once my contract is closer to finishing. The iPhone just hasn't evolved in the 3 years since the original iPhone, adding a front-facing camera isn't what I call a forward step.

I can see though if you like a smart-phone to just 'work', without the hacking or messing around, that an iPhone is probably the best choice.

I agree with all of that apart from the battery life.

I have had all 3 iphones and all have had atrocious battery life.
#22
I hope the price is right, if so I'm selling both of my iPhones & will probably get a new one :)
#23
Can anyone who followed WWDC last year remember if they announced the price as well as the spec ?
#24
I'm waiting to see what's announced tonight before making a decision on waiting for the iPhone release or getting an HTC desire tomorrow. The only thing putting me off the HTC is that I had an HTC HD2 which I sent back cause it felt too clunky compared to the iPhone. Is the android os a big improvment? It will be interesting to see how the new iPhone compares
#25
pw1500
I think they gave US price only.

That'll be enough to compare it to the 3GS price. If it's hundreds of dollars more then I'm off to get a Desire in the morning.
