From London to Sydney, New York and Singapore, people across the world will be joining us on 26 March 2011 to switch off their lights.

It’s a reminder to us all that we only have one planet Earth.

And it’s an urgent message that we want to reduce the impact our energy system has on that planet.

See link.

Good to see Wrestling get involved in environmental matters

Turning your lights off has zero impact as the energy will be produced anyway. Waste of time and that's the bottom line.......

That is WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) even tho sometimes called (World Wrestling Federation‎) while the one mentioned in this thread is WWF (World Wildlife Fund)

If people really did this (1 billion people - the entire Western world) turned off their lights and more significantly turned them back on one hour later, the environmental impact from the power surge caused by the simultaneous switch on and its knock-on effects on generation and the grid would massively cause far more environmental impact than the modest amount of energy saved.

I don't really see how tokenistic gestures such as this help at all - surely convincing people to switch gradually to more efficient light sources is a far better way of devoting time...

^^ I don't think the hour is aimed at making any sort of energy saving on the night, I would presume it's aimed at raising peoples awareness of wasting electricity through lighting in general

It'd knock the half time in the world cup final for a cocked hat!

.

Look up sarcasm.

Anyway, no point. The general view is it's not going to effect me and most people couldn't give a flying ****. sad,but true.

Yeah, I guess, but I still don't really buy it. They make a big deal about 1700 schools and 700 businesses taking part in the UK last year; surely it raises the question of why do these buildings need to have lighting on at that time anyway? Seems totally bizarre to have a situation where you can turn it off for this hour, but then it goes on again...
