XBMC - The benefits of owning an original xbox?

Hey, it has recently been brought to the forums attention that Game are selling original (pre-owned) Xboxes for £19.99, which I am considering buying.

I'd just like to know what the benefits would be for me if I did buy one.

My PC is set up next to my 32" TV, so any media I acquire I just unplug my monitor cable and plug it in to my TV, to watch.

I also have an Xbox 360, never managed to turn that in to a media centre but that doesn't bother me too much.

When people say they have them all different rooms, how are they doing this, do they have long cables everywhere?

don't really want this thread turning in to a what's XBMC, how do i do it thread because GOOGLE is the answer for them sort of questions

I have a wireless adaptor connect to my xBox(brick).

I've also upgraded the hard dive to a 320Gb.
With XBMC installed I just stream media over the Local network onto my xBox to watch on TV.

best to have a wireless adapter so you can stream whenever you choose.

But its just as good to have a large HDD, and just bang on a load of stuff altogether.

My pc is in my bed room and xbox downstairs. I just whack on the media I want to watch listen to and then take the xbox back downstairs. Doesnt take so long. Best thing ever! :-D

Read my poste here

Look at post #10 and it tells you how to use your 360 as a media centre without having a media centre PC.

It much easier than sorting out an original XBOX, trust me I have done it!

Where on your pc do the media files have to be saved, because i have one or two video files on my pc, but the 360 can't find them also have a few music albums which is the same also

they need to be in a shared folder on your PC

My house is full of cables. The one for the xbox is hidden under the floor and comes up by the tv socket though, it's just the ones for all the computers that create the spider web effect

As for the sharing of media, as i've got all my shares setup for use on any of my comps I just use XBMC's SMB sharing. Scroll down a list, select what I want and it plays it. Just like playing a file using media player from a networked pc.

Fwiw, I used to have a PC under the tv for many years but as soon as I discovered XBMC that went in the bin. The difference in picture quality was much better as the xbox is designed to work with a tv, no problem with refresh rates/getting the picture properly aligned onscreen etc.

The simplest solution for you, is to buy a basic modem-router with 4ports or a network hub.
connect both pc and xbox360 (grab latest 360 update) to it for an instant network. Use windows media player 11 to share your media folders ( i use a spare hdd to store everything n share that) and you have a media centre to be proud of. I also have PS3 setup exactly the same and another old xbox running xbmc and all 3 can be watching the same or differnt film with out any loss of performance on PC.
