DISC READ ERROR!
DISC READ ERROR!
DISC READ ERROR!
oh the woe

Sorry about that, sick of seeing that flash up after completing a song on guitar hero 2 or whilst shooting snow pirates on lost planet. This is my second 360, the original one that I bought from dixons online back in July 06 broke down displaying 3 red lights. This was only a few months back Jan/Feb time. I rang microsoft and they arranged for me to have it delivered, it was about a 3 week turn around from when I sent it, to getting it back. When I did get it back instead of fixing my console they sent me a refurbished one.

Now my refurbished one has the Disc Read Error fault, but this time I decided to try give Dixons a ring and see if I can swap it for a new one. The tech guy said just take it to your local currys.digital store, so hopefuly all being well tomorrow I will have a working 360, but for how long.

I'm hoping to accidently gain a 360 Hard drive from this unfortunate error. will cover my petrol costs :giggle:

anyway felt like getting that off my chest.

I got one at christmas and it displayed 3 red lights in february.
I took it back to blockbuster where i purchased it from and i accidently got a free hard drive:D
[mod]#2
I've had two that have died. Next time and it's in the bin for good. All my mates that have had one have also had the three lights at some point. I'm going to stop bitching about PS3 now as it looks like i'm going to buy one and dump the 360 now.
#3
give it a few months and the ps3 might have glitches,i 've read that some ps3 break so you cant put a disk in

I 've had my 360 for a good 18 months and had no problem apart from it freezing 3 times
#4
Do you mind if i ask you about these 3 red light problems?

Do you return the xbox 360 to the dashboard to cool down before switching off?

and is the xbox 360 in a well ventilated place?

Thanks, Just got an xbox 360 myself and want to avoid the 3 red lights!!
#5
my friend had the 3 red light.
He turned it off an on very quickly about 3 times.
then the red lights appeared.

However they left it for a hour or so then it worked again
[mod]#6
Both times mine have been well ventilated and had an additional cooling fan attached and still they've died. Good old Microshaft!!

Apparently the niko cooler can cause this (Read a few reports online suggesting this!)

Couldn't resist posting this :

simple fix for 3 red lights!

Oh no!

Think mine might be on the blink, Played it for probably 20 hours this week (at max) and i've just played PGR 3 on Xbox live, I was racing when all of a sudden the road turned (IE the red tarmac in the london bulldog circuit) turned into a greenish colour with a wave sea type affect and then when i'd finished the race, It froze on a black carbon fibre effect screen and wouldn't move, I promptly turned off my xbox and its now on the dashboard, Hopefully cooling down! (although was only on for about 50mins and 20 of that on the dashboard.!)

Im hoping it was just my internet connection but there wasn't any juddering or jerky movements, Just this grean sea affect on the road, So it looks graphics related!

Anybody had this problem before?

bump......... as i'm hoping someone knows the above?

Yes i had this problem mate, Sorry to tell you that mine resulted in 3 red lights on my console , Id be surprised after what you described if yours didn't do the same :-(
#12
My console's been going strong since launch day, what are you people doing to the poor things? :)

The system has only frozen once, and that was at the end of an online race on PGR3.

I thought so, Its been getting really noisy and now this has started happening.

Had it about 11 days so far and its been well ventilated and only used for 20 hours max (overall) and each time i've left it running on the dashboard for a short while to let it cool down.

Also the power brick is well ventilated!

Well i thought it was graphics related and not online, Its plugged directly into my router and there wasn't any jolts or break ups in the picture to suggest an connection problem.

So within 20 hours a new console (bought from Amazon.de, Brand new, although manufactured in august 2006?) is now about to break!

I got the 'unplayable disc' error 2 weeks ago, now its in for repair. Had it since new years, was also annoyed as I ordered 5-6 more games that morning. Got an email today saying they've recieved it, so hopefully all will be well. I might just sell this one and get an Elite.
#15
davids died about a month ago, just waiting for it to come back home now

Looks like Xbox no.3 is going back to the shop tomorrow

for how long (will it last), I ask in my original post... and the answer is Just over 5 months

at first it doesn't come up with any errors, just stops working ie the graphics start disappearing and the 360 becomes quieter. then comes up with cannot read disc...

psshht gives me an excuse to have a KFC for dinner tomorrow
#17
And the worst thing is that Microsoft actually counts replacment consoles as sales! Just imagine how close Sony and MS sales would be if 360 wasnt plagued by the 3 rings of death.
#18
i really hope if mine goes wrong i get a new one thats designed properly as apposed to another flawed rehash that will keep going dolally
#19
Mine died a few days ago. 3 red lights. We are on our third one in ten months.
Luckily the shop (Game) changed it no problems.
She said that most problems are caused by faulty motherboards that microsoft know about, and that new ones should have newer motherboards in them round about now. Why the hell microsoft did'nt recall them all in the first place is ludicrous.
#20
took it to currys today, and the guy behind the counter said he can't replace it without testing it first, i said it may take a few hours but its a very intermittant fault...

Anyway he's kept it at the shop to test it, knowing my luck it won't show the fault...

fault bein, when playing a game the disc drive will just stop running... game will still play until the disc needs to be read again, graphics end up like this
#21
My brothers on his 8th console since he bought it at launch (it's in a very well ventilated area) and only 1 of the replacements have happened this year but they gave him problems because they had a mix up with the additional 2 year warranty he purchased, they were trying to tell him it expired, even though the console hasn't even been available for 2 years and there's already a year warranty on the console anyway, so he's supposed to be covered for 3 years.

Microsoft are making a lot of bad moves in the market, the problem is the motherboard but they haven't resolved it properly and now my halo 3 just died because Microsoft didn't do approoriate quality checks on the Collectors Edition Tins, so the game had several scratches when it arrived loose in the tin (which is a problem that everyone experienced) but now the disc has loads more scratches.
#22
As expected no fault found, so that means i'm going to get my duff console back. and will have to send it to microsoft to get repaired.

Tried telling the CSR that it had a fault and that I have nothing to gain by wanting to swap my knackered 360 for a new one. I was told theres nothing they could do because the fault hasnt happened whilst they have been testing it (been tested for just over 2hrs).

I play games for 6hrs straight at times, I wouldn't put it passed them to just check that the screen is still running every so often and not actually play on it.

So now i think i'll have to return it to microsoft, have a console that will crash on me every night or email currys and tell them i want a refund for the console and go elsewhere.

Not impressed at all...

Missing out on Halo3 play

Think I must just be lucky. My 360 hasnt had any problems - but I guess thats mostly due to only having one game for it and is rarely used! The kids prefer to play the xbox they have in their rooms.
#24
does anyone have the number to ring to arrange for microsoft to send someone to pick up my 360?

Thanks
#25
I bought a Playstation 3 six months ago and it works perfect, life is great.
#26
mine has also been getting read errors recently,

as someone said the disc slows down then when it reads again the game crashes most of the time to the dashboard but sometimes compleatly freezes. had it about 3 months now and it started a few days after i got it. most of the time it happens in forza, disc slows down and the road then objects become seethrough then it crashes. really dont want to send it back as i kno the error wont happen and i will just be wasting my time and get a fubar console back.

also some of the time when the disc is spinning it clicks and sounds like something is flying round the drive, (even checked with a torch to see if there was something inside but nothing)
#27
think mines sorted noww but i have to use a nyko intercooler cooler... and it is very noisey... unless i've been scammed and got a fake one
#28
Mine has frozen up twice now, its not looking good..........
#29
I thought mine was in a cool place (glass shelf of its own, next shelf up is about "10 away from airflow holes). but it would freeze quite constantly...

although now that i use the cooler its fine for now

Mine used to freeze on COD 3 abit.
I have had 3 single red lights so far in 6 months

At least yours turns on :(

Solved my 360 crashing problems thanks to the microsoft CS team... It wasn't my 360 console that was causing my games to crash or freeze but the 360 harddrive. so I followed this:

teamXbox.com
Go to the system blade and then select memory.

Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?

And all seams to be working for now :-D
