Xbox 360 beats PS3...

Ok Ok... Bolt statement...

Personally, i’ve never understand the “Console war” argument, each one has there good bits and bad bits.. I personally prefer the Xbox 360.. Some of my friends prefer the PS3.. Each to their own.

Forgetting the console war crap when it comes to preferrence. I find it incredible that Sony has managed to let go of the iron grip they had. Can’t help but think that the Nintendo Wii has had something to do with this. Alsl find it quite interesting follow the sales figures every so often.

So.....

Realistically, we’ve got 4 years left of this generation (At most).. Some guys will say 5 years and beyond, but that’s just Microsoft talking up longevity in order to sell more Kinect.. Every console cycle has been roughly around 6 years.. Meaning this cycle (based on 4 more years), will be around 8-9 years.

Currently..

Xbox 360 is roughly 5.7 million units ahead of the Playstation 3.. It is also still outselling the PS3 consistently again (Since June-ish)..

Was a few estimates that by January 2011 – the PS3 would have a larger install base than the Xbox 360.. Obviously, not going to happen.

Generally the average gap between the two at each stage has been between 40,000-80,000 units per week. Trading blows.

In order for the PS3 install base to match Xbox 360s, it would need to outsell the Xbox 360 by 60,000 units every week for 2 years. Again, very unlikely that would happen.

Xbox 360 was around 5.3 units ahead of the PS3 on it’s launch.. So the Xbox 360 has extended it's lead over the PS3 by 0.4 million units in the 4 years the PS3 has been around.

All these figures have been based on vgchartz figures (Who also regularlly adjust when NPD release data)

I don’t find it interesting people arguing over which console has the best CPU, graphics or games..

I do find it pretty interesting that Sony with a near impenetrable position in the console market has slipped this much

I think this generation has settled in to its sales positions now due to the gaps with Nintendo, Microsoft & Sony in that order and neither can catch the one above.

I still don't see the next generation for a fair few years yet as Sony can't afford it and only within the last year started making money on console sales whereas MS won't see the need to commit billions to a new launch while they are the leading the market (discounting the Wii as it's a different type of console to the PS3 & 360)

Saying that though if Microsoft decide to try and finish Sony off then a new console would be the way to do it with the virtually unlimited money they can throw at it and leave Sony behind hoping they can keep going with PS3.

The point is it's too far behind now to catch up. The install base is smaller. If you discount Japanese sales and go on US & Europe then the user base is a lot smaller again.

Who cares about sales though?
Sales don't make one console better than another.

True..........i have both. Play most games on the 360 and just the exclusives on the PS3. But wouldn't want to have to settle for one or the other as they both have good and bad points over the other .

Sales don’t matter to us much, but they do to the companies. It’s interesting to see such a dominate company fall from grace. In the same way seeing Nintendos resurgance.

Then again.. Sales do matter to us..

Sony invested a ridiculas amount on the Playstation 3.. Rightly so, their last two consoles really paid off.

They also got hit pretty hard due to the econmic downturn, currently Sony are still in the red..

They’ve had to restructure and make quite a few job loses, finally starting to recover slightly (mostly thanks to their TVs). Although, they are starting to lose hold on their mobile business with Samsung and HTC cutting deep into their profits.

Microsoft have a mindblowing amount of cash in the bank, Nintendo have also come out of this with a pretty heavily balance.

Whatever position Sony are at in terms of install base and sales by the end of this console cycle will directly affect their ability to compete in the next generation, they will have no where near the funds they had to splash on the PS3.

Another problem is they’ve invested in Playstation Move (Which i love btw).. Unfortunately for them, stuff like Kinect is the future..

While i can’t see Kinect being great now, as the technology / software isn’t quite there.. For the next generation, motion tracking is going to be pretty important. With the investments that Microsoft are making, they’re positioning themselves very well for that. In the same way Nintendo saw where things were going and profitted massively off it, Sony really need to reposition themselves to do the same.

I honestly though Sony were going to sell the PS3 like gangbusters when HD DVD bowed out and Bluray took over the High Definition format.. But..

With people like Blockbuster going out of business and media streaming services and boxes selling like hotcakes, coupled with the fact TVs are integrating it now.. I can’t see Bluray being as much as a game changer as DVD was over VHS.

The 360 was 9-10 million ahead when the PS3 launched in Europe.
Up until the 360S launch the PS3 was outselling the 360 4 to 1 worldwide
Microsoft have lost more money this gen than Sony, the RROD fiasco cost them over 5 Billion and they wrote off the 3 billion that the original xbox cost them.
tbh i don't really care anyway, however your numbers are all wrong.
Microsoft really are pinning all their hopes on Kinect and their new phone operating system which are part of the same division, Kin cost them a lot of money, so if Kinect doesn't sell in vast numbers they will have to act fast to maintain their position.
Another problem is they’ve invested in Playstation Move (Which i love btw).. Unfortunately for them, stuff like Kinect is the future..
That may be true but I don't think so for this generation, too many gamers love controllers, and they are the people that buy the games, the Wii attach rates prove that. By next gen all 3 companies may have a controllerless option if Kinect takes off.
All 3 companies will be around for the next generation, and that's the main thing, better for us as competition drives innovation.
Just trying to add balance.

Yes.. In Europe.. My figures were never region based. They were based on the first launch date for each console.

sennasnit
Up until the 360S launch the PS3 was outselling the 360 4 to 1 worldwide

You just prove why you should use initial launch dates as a comparator as a lead. PS3 started peaking after the Playstation 3 slim and price drops, in the same manner in which the Xbox 360 peaked shortly before the PS3 release in Japan due to a small price drop and advantage of christmas sales without a competitor. While the PS3 is hitting the big sale parts of it's lifecycle, the Xbox 360 is hitting the slow down of it's own.. It's only sensible to use the initial launch date.

Each console will have peak, dip, peak and dip.. In relation to what software they have coming out, the strategy for price drops, revisions in hardware, additional accessories.. etc etc

Xbox 360 sold 5.3 million units from the first date of launch, till Playstation 3’s first date of launch. Easy pezzy, lemon squeezy.

sennasnit

This is where your argument completely falls apart.

Sonys last annual figures reported a £1.2 billion loss, with them still operating in the red right now.

Microsoft last annual figures reported a £10 billion profit.

See the difference? The difference is, Microsoft can afford to slip up.. Microsoft can afford pretty much anything..

Sony however, in a completely different position.. It’s only through TV sales and heavily restructuring and cutting staff is that they’ve made a profit in their last quarter. They simply can't afford to lose the dominance in the console market. It will undoubtedly affect their level of investment in the next generation.

Sales data does not include replacement Xbox 360s

Even if you were to goto your retailer and get a replacement from them (usually told to contact Microsoft directly), they would request a RMA from Microsoft which would not be included as a unit sold.

OP smells like a fanboy to me. When the cost of the RROD fiasco comes into the argument it turns from 360 beats PS3 to Microsoft as a whole beats Sony.

If your talking reports, other reports say PS3 sold more than the 360s up until end July reports by 4 million which brought the gap down to about 3.6million consoles. So considering 360s had sold more than 3.6m before the PS3 came out then the PS3 sells more over the time its been out. So PS3 has beaten 360 over the last year so title is fairly void.

Also the fact the 360 has become more reliable so will affect its sale figures since a lot of the units sold previously will be people buying replacements for RROD etc

You also mention the install base, as in amount of units in homes which will be a much closer total just to the amount of 360's which will have died being much more than the PS3

Unless you are a shareholder involved with either console, who cares? As a consumer I will buy which ever I prefer so it doesn't make a difference to me who sold more as we are not sheep.
(And I have a PS3 and 2 360s in case you think I'm some fanboy for PS3)

What you mean the same KInect that is selling out across the USA and now across Europe even berfore it's release ?.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-10-12-kinect-sold-out-at-game

---------------------------------------------------------------

Other than that I see the same old PS3 fanboys ("Sennasnit", "Darkknight" and the stealth fanboy "Csiman") have turned up to talk their same old lines and to probably add a +1 to each other comments ...............................

I don't need to list anything, I know everything.............................

Game only have 77 stores, so with 10 Kinects per store that's at least 770 Kinects sold!
Let me know when Amazon,Play and HMV sell out, also when the reviews appear how many of those pre-orders will turn into sales?

For someone who does the same +1 and clicking the "Like this comment" your argument holds no weight. If this was a PS3 beats Xbox 360 thread, you'd have been the first one to post.

What is your avatar? I've been trying to work it out.

Firstly. The RROD will of had a very small affect on Xbox 360 sales figures. Most consoles were either repaired by Microsoft or replaced by the Retailer, each course would of not had a direct affect on the sales. So you can’t really say that the RRODD had a substainial affect on sales figures.

Secondly – i’m not a fanboy. I used to own both consoles. I personally prefer the Xbox 360, but feel both consoles have their weak points and good points. I do however find the figures interesting, also that a once dominate company in the games console marketplace is now driven to 3rd place.

Forgetting the lead built up of 5.7 million units before the PS3 was released.

Lets look at each year since the PS3s release, the sales of each console and the difference between them in total.. I thought people may look for themselves.. But it’s clearly easier to it out this way. Gives the best perspective of how well the PS3 is doing against the Xbox 360 in sales volume.

November 2006 – November 2007
Xbox 360 sold: 7.4 million
PS3 sold: 5.6 million

Xbox 360 outsells the PS3 by: 1.8 million units

November 2007 – November 2008
Xbox 360 sold: 9 million
PS3 sold: 9.7 million

PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 by: 0.7 million units

November 2008 – November 2009
Xbox 360 sold: 11.3 million
PS3 sold: 10.6 million

The Xbox 360 outsells the PS3 by: 0.7 million units.

November 2009 – NOW (were pretty close to November as it is)
Xbox 360 sold: 10.7 million
PS3 sold: 12.1 million

The PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 by: 1.4 million units.

Total Difference – November 2006 – NOW

Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 from it’s launch to now by: 0.4 million units

So with a 5.3 million unit head start, the Xbox 360 has managed to extend that lead by 5.7

Now the Xbox 360 has a slim version and Kinect, sales have begun to overtake PS3 again.. No doubt, it will flip back and forth through the cycle. Both consoles exchanging blows before the final whistle.

Lets say, for arguments sake.. Sales flip largly towards PS3 again this week. Also that using the figures below, 1.8 million units is going to the best they can expect to beat a competitor over the year... Also that we’ve got a gurannteed 4 more years left of this generation.

The PS3 would have to sell 1.8 million more units than the 360, year on year for the next 4 years to have a larger total sales volume than the 360. .. Which isn’t very realistic.

Since the “Console War” between companies (not fanboys) is generally fought and won based on the total number of sales generated before moving to the next generation... You can see why i believe the Xbox 360 has beaten the PS3 this time around. Unless something pretty remarkable happens with PS3 sales, which is incredibley unlikely at this point in the cycle.

To add insult to injury - we've got a gaming market which has grown since the PS2 was released.. Yet..

A 4 year period period since launch, the PS2 generated 69 million units.. Opposed to PS3 generating 38 million units over the same 4 year period..

So yes, i find it very interesting.. Because this will in no doubt directly affect the investment they can make for the next generation, also an incredible painful and almost crippling turn of events for Sony.

the 360 will always outsell the ps3 due to replacements being bought and being cheaper in general to totally disregard people having to buy a new console is like closing your eyes and going lalallalalalalalala im not listening 360 is better lalallalalalalalaa you only have to look at the amount of rrod consoles that have been sold on ebay , hukd, gumtree thats only for the uk and the amount of guides to fix it, clamp kits an the fact that microsoft didnt acknowledge they were at fault for the clamp warping the motherboard

It's a bit like saying more Ford Fiestas have been sold than Ferraris.
Of course the cheaper console will sell more.
Sony were selling the PS3's at a loss for a long time for a reason, because they were offering a much more advanced console, but had to compete with the prices.

If we are to say that sales matter, then Nintendo has lapped everyone and won ages ago.

The PS2 whooped the Xbox, but Microsoft didn't collapse. Nor will Sony in this case of vice versa.

Only xbox fanboys would proclaim that RROD has no effect on sales, judging by this site alone 70% of 360's are flashed, these can't be sent back for RROD repair so what do they do? Hmmm that's right, they re-buy.
Don't count on a sub £200 PS3 price drop having no effect on sales either, historically that's where the big sales come from, Microsoft has already had the benefit of such a drop, Sony has not.
And don't count out GT5, it's always been a system seller.
Who knows what will happen in the next few years, but to categorically say that will will not pass the 360 is blinkered and foolish.

I rest my case.

I will discount USA then, the PS3 is miles ahead.
The PS3 and 360 are virtually neck and neck in EU, not bad for a years head start.

I’m sorry mate, but that’s not far short of the silliest comment i’ve ever seen written..

The difference between the Ford Fiesta and a Ferrari is the profit margin. So Ferrari selling 100 cars and still make the same amount of profit as Ford selling 1000 Fiestas.

Initially the PS3 was sold at a greater loss than the Xbox 360 was, in addition. The Xbox 360 still costs Microsoft less to manufacture than the PS3 costs Sony.. So not only have Microsoft made more profit per unit than Sony have, they've also sold more units..

Next...

The PS3 was bound to outsell the original Xbox, of course Microsoft knew that.. Again, the difference here being is that Microsoft posted a £10 billion pound profit last annual figures and Sony posted a £1.2 billion pound loss. Once again, Sony are still operating in the red.

Sony won’t collapse, but they will be seriously restricted in their investment for the next generation of consoles.

What case? All you’ve done through this discussion is either talk rubbish or misrepresent the truth.

You show me the offical and solid figures which suggest that Xbox 360 sales have been directly and substainially artificially boosted by the RROD.... Otherwise, you’re just talking hot air.

The fact.. Yes.. The Fact.. Is that repairs, replacements and retail RMAs are not included within the sales figures.
