my disk drive on my 360 is starting to fail giving me the unreadable disc screen and also telling me to play this disc in a xbox 360 console. i want to replace it but im guessing its not just a case of changing it over for a new one? heard someone talking about keys and stuff? anyone know how to change these over or how much it would cost me in a shop etc?

any info would be helpfull, thanks.

can you not send your 360 off to xbox?
I needed too for mine..

you will need to get the drive key and firmwire of your drive and spoof the key and flash the new firmwire to the new drive.

my xbox is about 3 years old so isnt covered by warrranty i think, but if i send my xbox off to xbox im guessing they would charge a fortune to do it?

i have no idea how to spoof keys and flash firmware etc.

has anyone paid to have this done and if so how much did it cost?

They will charge you anywhere from £65 upwards to fix it, or you could get in contact with user "baconsandwich" on here, he seems pretty handy with a 360 or two, not sure if he does do repairs other than to his own stuff, but it may be worth asking what he would charge to do it for you.

do you know what drive you have in your 360, either hitachi samsung benq or lite-on... I've recently swappd my nephews drive over, because his wasn't reading any discs and didn't take me too long to do, because I have the tools to read the key from the original drive. His was an hitachi

My xbox drive went but rather then paying microsoft to repair, i a console only off ebay

they are ok to repair, aslong as the original drive is in the 360, so that the key matches the motherboard, then you can either buy the same drive, and just swap the pcb's. Or you can buy a different drive and spoof it so the motherboard thinks its the original... Not greatly knowledgeable on the spoofing as yet, but i pick most things up quite quickly

from the pics without taking the drive out i just ejected the drive and it matched the toshiba/ samsung drive from the markings on the tray. thanks for the images fwibble great help!

to confirm its a toshiba/samsung, pull the faceplate off, easy to remove, and below where it says xbox 360 on the drive tray there is a little keyhole shaped hole, in there if it is as you say a toshiba/samsung, it will have a red wire. Apparantly there are 2 types of this drive, so could be quite easy for replacement, I could do it but i'm a bit rough handed at removing the seal and advise anyone who sends me 360's to first remove the seal themselves.

Although i could offer you further assistance to help you do it yourself

To change the dvd rom drive will cost £50 plus,i would sell it on ebay spares or repair, should get £80 plus, put this towards a new xbox.If you do want this one repaired i will do it for £50 plus the P&P which will be abou £8 each way.

you'd have to weigh up the pro's and cons of letting someone else do it for you, not sure how much i'd do it for, its not a long job, but remember if your going to pay £50 i'd suggest paying an extra £15 to get microsoft to do it atleast then you'd get a guarantee.

well i got my xbox live running out on the 13th this month so what i might do is not renew my live account, sell it for spares on ebay or on here, then put cash towards it and get one with hdmi output on it as for me to spend out £50 on a repair i just aswell sell it and use the money to get another one. easy repair for someone who knows what there doing but weighing it up its hassle i could do without.

thanks for the help tho! so watch this space soon as i will probably wait till end of month ( pay day ) and then sell this one!
