Xbox 360/External Hard Drive Question.

Hi guys and girls, Sainsburys are picking up my broken elite 2moz and I have to send everything back as they are replacing it completely. Can I transfer all my stuff from my 120gb 360 HDD onto an external hard drive, then back onto the new elite hard drive when the replacement comes?

Thanks alot in advance peeps.

p.s cheers to everyone for helping me on my freezing problem thread.

From previous threads on this subject I don't think you can, even with the update you can only store 16GB with USB. well. 32GB over 2 USB devices.
But i get the feeling, you wouldn't be able to just transfer, as it's a new 360. But I may be wrong.

I think that i read that if you partition 16gb from your hard drive you can use it as USB storage for your xbox. I'm not sure though. Worth looking up...

Edit: just read your post. Sorry didn't realise you haven't got the update

had a look on google and im sure theres some threads saying you can but just thought id check on here. will give it a try later.

yeah it is a con i read the 16gb limit is something to do with Microsoft being able to bypass a legal loophole to do with something. sounds about right for MS. By the looks of things alot of usb drives arent even compatible, loads of people complaining on the xbox forums.

For obvious reasons they don't generally let you just transfer stuff from one 360 to another, same on my PS3 it will allow you to do a straight transfer from one PS3 to another, but certain info won't move. I suppose it makes sense.

Just don't send back the hdd? :p

But the simple answer is nope. Not unless you get one of those transfer kits that allow you to send everything to your PC (I think dealextreme sell them). Unlikely to get it before tomorrow though.

Are they sending another one at the same time?

If so can you not just swap the hard drives over before the courier takes the broken one away>?

Would the HDD not be specific to a certain 360, would it know, as in would it require a re-format?

no you can use your hard drive in any 360 without it being reformatted

tried it on my brothers 360 and its letting me use an external hard drive, it names it as a usb stick drive. The update must allow you to now use them. I had to format it and ive tested it by transferring gamer pics back and forth and all works fine. Will have to chance it anyway as i dont think ive got any other option.

yeah that was my first thought but its not a straight swap, they pick it up then next week deliver a completely new one.

No mate, would have done that otherwise but no chance of me being able to :x

Yeah youve got a point there, sheeeeite. Surely Sainsburys cant do that though or should provide a way to transfer data over. I dont want an xbox if I cant keep my game save/profile/dlc and neither would any other gamer. All of their staff know absolutely nothing about xboxes.

how old is the elite, why does it need replacing:?:

an xbox 360 hard drive works in any xbox 360, some downloadable content may need to be re-downloaded, but you should be able to do that at no cost.

Oh, that's good!

But if he can't keep his old HDD, it doesn't really matter as he won't be able to transfer everything in time, don't you need a transfer kit?

2 months old and just froze on me everytime i powered up, had a look around and as someone else on the site said its was an e73 or woteva error.

i know a 360 hard drive works in any console, what im asking is can i transfer all my stuff onto a regular NON 360 external hard drive then from there back onto my new 360 hard drive when it turns up. marketplace stuff isnt a problem its just game saves.

yeah you need a transfer kit which i have. but as already mentioned they take my old console then deliver the new one on a later date so theres no way id be able to transfer over. I think everyone is missing what im asking; i want to use a regular NON 360 external hard drive to store my stuff on until the new xbox comes then i can transfer my stuff onto the new hard drive that comes with it. Just not sure if it will work.

riiiiiight here we go, I'm using windows 7 so if you're using some other operating system these steps may very

1) use your transfer cable to connect your 360 hdd to your pc
2) let the pc detect the hard drive
3) Download xport360, unrar and install it
4) Run xport360 in "run as administrator" mode

on loading up xport360 should detect your 360 hard drive, you will see it in the left hand side of xport360.

5) click the hard drive which refers to the 360 hdd
6) click on the [+] next to partition 3

In the right hand side of xport360 there should be 3 file/folder names, you want the one titled content.

7) Drag the content folder from the xport360 to your PC desktop

This may be a lengthy process depending on how many games you've installed to the hdd, might be a good idea to remove the installed games to speed up the process.
