I just updated my 360 with the latest update and since then the colours have gone funny. There seems to be a green tinge to things - looks like it is a hardware problem :

I called up microsoft and it will cost £81 to fix - I don't suppose there is an alternative? It doesn't have the red rings but even if it did i'd be out of that warrenty too me thinks as it was a launch console.

Anyone else had this graphics problem?

A VGA one - i've not had any problems in the past with it though.. it was about 10 mins after the update it went funny. I don't think it could have over heated either as the power block and console are seperate and both are in well ventilated, cool areas

Sounds like you got an E74 error on it´s way.
Last time we had this it took an hour from the screen looking weird to getting the actual error code.
No alternative for fixing I´m afraid.
But 81 pounds?! You may aswell buy a new console and sell the accessories instead

I had the same problem last year I dont think an e74 error is due tbh It's just your av cable try cleaning the connections.

Mine wasn't dirty it was faulty but I have heard of people sorting that problem out by cleaning the connections.
Might get the 360 out thinking about it and give modern warfare 2 a whirl:-D

try connecting it via your component / composite cable if you still have it. see if it's still green if so then definitely a problem with the console.

Ahh right :) I see.
Well glad you got it sorted but in almost all cases those symptoms means an E74 is coming.
Broken cable is a rare thing, E74 isn´t

Ive heard of this to but find it hard to believe this with a digital signal.

The best story about 360 error I heard was a member on here asking what a error code was via the flashing lights was, he had turned a 360 on that had been in a cupboard unused for a while and got some error code and wanted it deciphering by the number of flashes, it turned out to be a graphics/av code as they had only plugged the power supply in to make sure it powered up and not plugged the video leads in, I'm not mentioning no names here though.

He's got it connected via VGA.

A loose/bad VGA connection can definitely make the screen go red, green or blue but it'd be a very strong green tint rather than just tinged.

the whole screen isnt tinted, just certain parts of the screen are different colours.. for instance when you press the xbox button instead of it being a bluey grey it's green. I thought it might be the e74 error (having looked up on google)

I'm going to try a different cable when im next back at home but I dont think that will be the problem.

What are the chances of Microsoft taking pity on me if it red rings and getting it repaired - im out the 3 years I think..
#12
They won´t fix it for free if it´s older than 3 years.
By the way, you were lucky it lasted this long....
:)

I know! I always wondered what the fuss was about as my xbox has always been fine..

The joke is my friend told me how his xbox had died on him and I told my bf how I was really lucky to have mine running well (this was today). I go home and find mine has died - hah, talk about jinxing myself...!!

Its just annoying as I cant warrant spending cash on it as I don't play it enough :\ not sure what i'll do!

I guess that´s why it lasted this long then :)
We use ours every day and had 3 die on us so far.(1x3 red lights and 2x E74)
You can always sell it on eBay or so and have a look out for a good offer on a new one.
#15
Aye I suppose your right - I guess i'll just have to have a llook out in the next few weeks - I was looking forward to LeftForDead 2 as well! D'oh!
#16
Well you still have like 3 weeks then :)
Out on nov 20th

Until then, just keep using it until it actually dies and you get the error code on screen or just flashing red lights....

Don't listen to any of the above responses saying there's no alternative.
Ofcourse there is!
There's a few method's you could try.

1. Overheat the console to flow any cold solder joints:
Put either match sticks or anything similar that's non conductive in the back holes where the fans are, turn it on and wait until you get 2 red lights (overheating) leave it 2 or 3 minutes and turn it off then let it to cool down for 45 minutes.

2. X-Clamp replacement (Google it)

3. Southbridge heatsink, as above google it.

4. Heatgun the southbridge of the board as that's where E74/3 error codes are.

Hope this helps, any questions or help needed give me a shout.

All those "fixes" are temporary solutions.
Microsoft are the only ones who can properly fix the console.

But yeah, if she wants to do that, then ok.
May last a few hours, days or if she´s lucky a few months.
I personally just don´t see the point,
which is why I didn´t mention it.

Heatgunning (done right) is actually a permanent fix! Better still a BGA reflow.
#20
Thanks everyone for your replys.. i had a look at the heatgun method and im not sure id be confident enough to open up the xbox.

I think i'll carry on using it until it dies and then try the matchstick method - or would this be better to do while its still sort of working ^_^?

EXACT same thing happened to me, if you turn it back on the green may still be there or it may go. but over the coming weeks it will get worse and lead to E74 or the RROD. my advice is:

A) Leave the console on and running for a few hours, this might bring on the damage and it should be repairable under extended warranty

B) Replace it with a cheap deal and sell on all the accessories
#22
Thanks Jonesy, unfortunately I dont think it will be covered as it was a launch console so I think its going to have to be option B :\

I think i'll continue to play it until it completely konks out and then call up microsoft and see what they say

Cheers all!

e74 is now covered under the warranty.

Force a red ring of death and send it back.
