hey all just wondered if anyone could help me out here. i have an xbox 360 the new one with hdmi etc. have just been playing on dirt for a bit when i looked around the dashboard for the first real time to see whats on there. i found the memory bit where you can select the hard drive and it appears to be saying the size is 13.9gb? i thought these things had 20 gb drives in them?
any help on this would be appreciated as the xbox site forums are a waste of time and the official site has none of this and the freephone number for xbox support goes to an indian call centre where they do not understand what i am asking them about.

any help on this would be gratefully appreciated please

you wil already have pre downloaded stuff on there such as videos and other demos, just delete them and I think it goes upto 18gb (it needs 2gb to store the sytem files and stuff)

YOu never get whats advertised for a hard drive.

I'm not sure the proper explanation but its something to do with a GB being 1024MB and most manufactuers count a GB as 1000MB, so you lose some space there. Its the same with computers, my "200GB" hard drive in reality is only about 175GB i think (i'm in work now and cant check the exact figure).

There is also some stuff preinstalled on the XBOX which takes up some more of the space.

I'm sure someone else can give you a more detailed, technical reason if you need it lol

yeah just found some reviews on them on the web saying most are only actually 13 gb and not the stated 20 gb as it says when you buy the damn thing good ole microsoft as usual

okay sure the usual "you never get the advertised amount" etc

but with the xbox it stores alot of backwards compatibility stuff on it which takes up the rest

Memnoch - I was wondering the same thing to. I've recently bought the newer V2 pro version and was wondering why there was so much missing space!? I used to own an original 360 premium ages ago and although there was never a full 20GB space on the original, properly due to what Harvie and biff are saying, I could swear there was more available space than 12-13 GB? Also I have noticed that on my new system, it does not state 20GB on the HDD, I thought I could remember this plastered over the original!

Maybe larger demos on the new system, more embedded system info on the HDD as newer components i.e. HDMI connection, but no idea ???

Just as I finished typing I saw what you just posted! Really? Only 13 GB on the newer systems? the cheeky b******s, they kept that quiet :x

I dont know i think 13gb is still alot of space, i recently upgraded though demos were taking up alot of space as well as downloadable content it was quite feasible to fill up

yeah true 13 gb is alot but it does say 20 gb when you order them in the first place. i wonder if its cause to be able to get a refund on it. although obviously you can't ask microsoft it would appear as there email help doesn't seem to work and the call centre is in india and did not understand what i was saying and just kept saying well take it back then?

There must be something on it.
Have you checked there isnt any demos or videos on it
#10
theres some demo's that were on it like cars and something else but on the memory bit on the dashboard it say 13.9gb and 11.5 gb free

#14
so if they only have 13gb when new is there anyway to get the full 20 as stated or is it just bad advertising?

firstly you will never the full amount on any hard drive, the hardrive needs space to access itself or something so you would get like 18gb on any other hard drive, the rest of the space is for backwards compatibility

no you cant get more then 13gb free space unless you hakced your xbox and your hard drive etc
