Xbox 360 help

Hiya, I'm probably asking a really obvious question thats probably going to annoy people but.....
I want to get an xbox 360 elite, mainly for streaming video files from my PC. Will I be able to do this as soon as I open the box though? There's all this chat about 'modding' etc but what is that for?
My PC runs windows XP, do I need media centre??

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

dont need media centre but your files still need to be mpeg for xbox to play them but you dont need an elite to do this, normal 360 will too

Ethernet cable supplied with Pro & Elite to connect to back of PC which will allow this, as Mrs Moon says

There is a dashboard update from xbox live which enables playback of divx videos too, which doesn't cost anything.

yeah, but even if not pro as we copuldnt get hold of 1 when they came out, any old cheap ethernet off ebay connected to pc or router will work. :)

Ahh. I want the elite because I'd really like to have the console in black! Petty I know!

I thought the 360 was good with all type of file extensions?? Won't it play .avi and .mov??? That will have blown the idea straight away!

And it will work by plugging it into my router, instead of directly into the computer won't it?

Well i have XP Pro and a 360 and i cannot stream movies, music and the like from my pc.
Mine is hard-wired using an ethernet cable, i do not have a wireless set up and use it for Live
I cannot stream, gave up in the end and just bought an 8Gb stick since i also found i cannot copy to/from the 360's hard drive either :-(

I have a Mac and I can stream to my 360 :)

It will work connecting your 360 to your router via ethernet. That is how mine is connected up.

[EDIT] I can play some avi's but others wont play. It's weird.

Good idea, but when you have almost 3TB of video files that could get a bit long winded!

What file extension do you mean, avi play via DivX or do you mean a different extension altogether?

I am having a 'mare today
I have just checked what is on my memory stick and yes, i can confirm it DOES play avi files. I have hitman on there for example and watched it last night.
I do remember running the december update and i am sure too, a codec update has occured since.
Best thing to do, is get a memory stick and try.......

Thats a great link thanks!

So you can stream .avi files then. :) But you have to have some sort of software running with the files in? Is it not possible just to set up windows sharing on folders and let the xbox pick the files out of the designated folders?

Check out my old post here to set up streaming.

I hope this helps.

It looks like it will do what I want then...just a bit scared I'm going to have file format issues and didn't really want more software running in the background on my computer :(

I don't, sorry  I just remember putting the stick in, it complaining, it either went off and found the codecs, or, i googled the error message and did what the error message said. It's the error message you need, if one appears. That sounds such a **** reply but it's vague in my head as to what happens, but long and short is, you can play avi files

You only have to set up the file sharing in Windows Media Player, then it runs in the background

I take it you have to save them in the Windows Media player library then, not just stick them in a random folder on your hard drive?

my movies set up for xbox360 are on my pc c: drive under my documents\my videos , and yes .avi do play
I was hoping there was a way to stream live content from the net, but don't believe this is possible
using wmp 11 you need to set up share priorities and temp disable windows firewall whilst you set it up - turn on xbox and search for other media location (ie your pc) or at least that's how it worked for me.

Yes this is what I was wondering. It will be a bit of a hassle if every time I obtain a new video I have to import it into the library etc

You can set windows media player to monitor folders for new files if this is the case, but you can browse through any shared folders from your xbox
