well he needs the xbox, ethernet cable or wireless adapter, headset, router and an xbox live code there around £27 on ebay for 1 year which is fairly cheap. that will get him on xbox live. for playing wise he will need a controler and a game
#2
you'd need an xbox live account - which you need to buy. If you want the full features of LIVE:p

also i would recommend a premium/pro console, this comes with a 20gb HDD which is useful if you are on xbox live for the downloadable content.

do you have a router?

not true, you get the email free and a silver account for free, you have to pay for gold, which enables you to play games online

If you Buy a New Xbox 360, You can set up a new account and you will get a month free online play.

If you are going to be going online, I would reccomend getting a Pro / Premium console. This will give you a hard drive (needed for online play), headset, ethernet cable and a wireless controller.

When you buy your new console, make sure that you ask for a 175W Console as they are more reliable and have better fans installed. They are also called a falcon chipset and are alot quieter :)

yes have a router, do i need the premium for the live or can it be done without?

thanks guys, will leave rep

the premium bumps it up a bit tho dont it?

He will need to get a Gold XBox Live account ontop of whatever console/package you get.

This is basically a twelve month subscription to xBox Live its £40 in shops but can be had here for £25

You will also need to consider how far away your existing router is to where the XBox is to be played.
The xbox comes with a cable already but for long distances a longer cable or wireless adapter may be required.
Personally the xBox is the only wired connection in our house so place right next to it

Yeah, the premium is about £40 more. It is well worth the money though :)

The hard drive included is worth the £40 on its own, he will need one if he wants to download demo's, pictures and go online

It is recommended Loupomm but not entirely necessary, if you were to get the premium / pro i would also buy him a play and charge kit around £7 - £9 to save on the batteries

The Premium (now rebranded as a "Pro") comes with a 20GB hard drive which if you are going to be getting Live is well worth it.
You can save game downloads/updated and other content to it.

Basilcally there are 3 different types of xBox on the market:
Core/Arcade - Basic entrance package; (Core is the older verison - to be avoided as has wired controller)
Premium/Pro - Very similar to core but with 20GB Hard drive both have a wireless controller
Elite - Black version of xBox with 120GB hard drive and wireless controller

The Pro is the best one IMO and if your looking at them instore check the back of the box that is says HDMI and has a 175w power supply (this makes them the lastest model). There is no two ways about it if your going to be using xBox Live the Pro is worth the extra moneyI find asking at the counter in HMV best, as they normally have some cracking package deals that are not well advertised.

HMV Instore. Pro console with Gears of War and Mass Effect £199.99

Zavvi (Virgin) instore with credit card, I got the pro with GTAIV and Scene It with the 4 buzz controllers for £211 two days ago
#13
For an extra tenner you can get halo 3 instead of Scene it but its less than £20 for that brand new anyway so pretty much upto you. there are some cheap deals out there but I was impatient and wanted GTAIV

you can go online without the hard drive!!!
Don't know where people got the idea that you can't from. I had a core fror three months before i bought a hard drive, playing live all the time!
#15
You must have had a big card then, 512 mb ?

And that dont come with the core....
#16
i'll see if i can get him a deal on quidco too, save some of his pennies :)

Its not the actual ability to play games on line its more about downloadable content.

If someone is never planning on hooking their xBox to the net then a HD has less importance (although still worth it in my view) than someone who is; mainly due to demos (just downloaded GRID which was 756MB), arcade games, game updates, extra content etc..

I think your going to need a harddrive at some point so would just go for the pro right away. As I said I got mine for GTAIV and if he's going to end up with a few games he could use the memory quite quickly. They are only £20 more than a wii now anyway.

i've just bought a core and online is great, i am trying to get a hard drive though and if i could choose i would buy a pro, cheaper in the long run, try before you buy, if you refuse the gold memebership they offer it free for a month when you first go online,

Hi Lou,
as others have already said - the premium is the one to go for.......the hard drive is also necessary to play some original Xbox games.

The other thing to bear in mind (if your son is using live) is the language can be "colourful". If he is still young enough for this to be a problem there are parental controls that you can enable.

mine was part of a deal argos had easter last year. It was a the smallest one i think.

I was trying to get across that to actually play online (which is all i wanted) a hard drive isn't necessary:thumbsup:

Hi lou - there is more information on here

Looks complicated but it will become more straightforward once you have the xbox.
Your son will love it.
