Can anyone explain what is involved in having xbox 360 live. My 14 year old son wants me to get this but I have no idea what to do. How much does it cost/where do I get it from etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Live allows the playes to play multiplayer oline games. Get updates and extra maps.
Cost is around £35 for the year and worth it.
Increases the amount of playability out of a game.
#2
definatly worth it if you play call of duty 4/5 amazing game online :D
you get your first month free so if you hook up your xbox to the internet you can see what its like for a month before you buy it!

£35 is WAY too expensive...

you can get it from other sources that members of HUKD will vouch for, for around £25

OP...having Live basically means that your child when completing certain games wont bug you for a new one as they will be too busy playing online...

especially as mentioned COD 4 & 5....

COD4 is over a year old and there are still THOUSANDS who play it online every night

about 70K+ last night if memory serves

Aargh! I can feel a 'stick-in-the-mud' type post coming.....sorry....can't....help...it....

Your Son's only 14 and both CoD games mentioned are rated 15+. It's obviously your discretion as to what your Son is like etc, but there's a fair bit of gore and carnage in CoD:WaW.

tbh I didnt see the age...so yes, OP discretion would be advised...

However I disagree...COD isnt gory...carnage yes but not gory...GOW is gory, in COD you see a little bit of blood, thats it

OP...what sort of games does your son like?

Halo is popular online too, no gore in that
[helper]#6
Agree with ODB - COD 3 & 4 is not gory and I think it would be fine for a 14 yr old. Gears of war, left4dead etc are a great deal more bloody. Halo would be fine also.

Aside from the gold membership already mentioned - you will need broadband and a way to connect the xbox to your broadband router (easiest way is to use the network cable supplied with the xbox). If the xbox is in a different room from the router you will need to use home plugs or if you have a wireless network a wireless adaptor (around £45)

Xbox live is well worth the money - for games like COD the mulitplayer online considerably adds to the life of the game. I still regularly play COD3 despite it being over 2 years old.

Gari?? u play on XBL??

Didnt think it would be your thing..cool...whats your name on XBL?

Put simply: if you get your son xbox live and the right games: COD 4\5 you probably won't see him much for the foreseeable future.

Firstly you would need his xbox 360 plugged into the Internet via an Ethernet cable OR purchase a wireless adapter which will connect to your wireless Internet if you have it. The adapter costs over £40 at the moment and is costly even in the 2nd hand market.

Xbox live for one year will cost you between £26-£30 if you buy from the correct place online i.e. Get the activation code emailed to you.

COD 4 isn't as gory or horrific as COD 5/WAW is in places(blown off/exploding limbs), bare in mind both games are rated 15 and do feature a bit of foul language - though to be honest he's probably seen far worse on the TV or Internet.

First month subscription is free so if he's already connected you've nothing to lose.

XBL username is Aitch2 - usually play COD3 - war - Merville, Poisson or Mayenne. I tried COD4 but I preferred the more open maps on COD3. Waiting for the price of COD5 to drop to a reasonable level before buying (and I've still got GRAW 2 and Rainbow 6 vegas to play)

Make sure before you go online that he hasn't entered his details as under 18 as I've heard people have had issues when they eventually turn 18 in trying to get the child protection stuff off the gamertag. Also NEVER use your credit card to purchase a gold subscription through Xbox Live itself as it is a ****** to get them to stop renewing the sub automatically every year.

Play.com seems to be the cheapest as a shop and some private sellers like jasper1675.com sometimes have good deals.

Excellent advice - stick to the scratchcard style purchases. If you use a CC and it expires, when they try to take payment they disable your XBL account!!! Use Scratchcards and once it expires you automatically drop down from Gold to Silver.

BTW, I paid about £12 for my 12 months Xbox live and got Forza Motorsport with it (Xbox 1, but works on the 360 too). Look out for any original 'xbox live starter packs' as although the card states Xbox, it'll work for the 360 as well.

Don't look to hard or for 2 long though as 99.9% certain I bought them all when play did the pgr halo2 ones as well. ;-)

If Ms make it free next year as was rumoured(it ain't never gonna happen but just in-case) anyone who has loads of 12month left from starter kits scratch and enter them all if you want a refund, as If it does become free, returning all the starter kits is gonna be a nightmare.

MS done that on mine on the old Xbox. Had a month free trial - but had to give CC details. I cancelled - but they still took the money. I rang up in the end to complain - and they still kept the money and cancelled the sub!!!

Couple of days ago I activated my free month on Xbox live from the 360. (For the kids - I very rarely play computer games on an Xbox!)

My youngest (8 YO) has been using it - but not convinced Id let him loose on it alone. Already heard some language I'd rather not let him hear!

Just need top get him Fifa09 as its probably a safe one to play!

You can tweak the settings to limit communication to "friends" only etc
