Xbox 360 live gold enables you to play online against other players etc. Xbox 360 live silver means you can't play with other people, but you can add friends, voice chat etc. Xbox Live Gold is what he'll want and is the better option.

You can buy 12 month cards yes, go into Game or Gamestation and they'll sort you out. Alternatively you can purchase the 12 months on the xbox itself with a credit card, I think.

If he's never had a live account before he'll get one month full gold membership free when he joins & creates his online tag, so you don't need a live membership card straightaway. If he wants to 'buy' any extras then you'll need live points - virtual money if you like.

Also if he plays any EA games (even 3+yr ones) his DOB / age will need to be registered as min 13yrs on xbox live as the EA age restrictions over-ride the xbox live parental controls. I made that mistake only once ;-)

you will need to have an xbox wireless networking adapter which you can get from game etc, microsoft will give you a month free subscription to gold which allows you to download map packs, games, themes etc from the marketplace (some of these you will need to add microsoft points, this you can do by either going into game etc), you can do live by direct debit paid once a month which is £4.99 which works out at £60 a year! apposed to £40 a year if you buy it at once from either the console itself or by going into game or somewhere like that.

Good luck with this, its easier than what it sounds... Trust me
