there are 3 drivess, samsung, hitachi and phillips. The samsung are the best in my opinion and there are more firmware realeases for them. Hitachi are also good as the problems of them not picking up certain types of media seems to have been fixed. Phillips are the new quieter drives which cannot currently be flashed with custom firmware.

The latest firmware for the samsung is 5.2 a,b,c,d

Basically each letter is very slightly different. 5.2a reads backup at 12x where d reads backups at 4x.

Its not essential to keep upgrading firmware but its usefull as new versions often have better features.

The firmware works on live without an problems. Personally i think if microsoft are gonna ban they would of started by now. however it is a risk you take by having the modified firmware.

i have an old xbox360, from march last year. i know it has the drive that can be used to play backup games

Just wanted to know what i do.

While ago i read on xbox scene that there was a new piece of hardware coming out that just meant you open your xbox up once then everytime you want to enable or disable hacked firmware you switch a switch.

Is this out yet or are there better ways? Just dont want to solder anything really :) or have to open up xbox360 all the time

you still have to open your case, quite easy tho. but upgrading the firmware is softmodding and requires no soldering, you just need a compatible sata chipset and a sata cable

there is only 2 drives for the 360 , the Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 DVD and the Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L , if you are not on xbox live you wont need to update the firmware much

"Hacking the 360 For Dummies" - be warned if you are a dummy don't try this stuff.

Its a shame it was so easy to find a firmware change allowed copied games to be played - since the pirates have what they want there seems to be very little drive to the scene.
