Probably something wrong with the DVD, call up MS and tell them you have three red ring and get it fixed, say you're still in warranty.

will they not need proof of purchase with the xbox? and it is out of the warranty too?! i am tempted to tell them i have the 3 red rings, are there any repercussions if they check it?

google "red ring of death"
#4
If you want to you can force a three red ring.
suspended#5
yeh i have googled it, the towel trick thing to force it? how effective is it? have you had any issues with Microsoft and returning if it hadnt got the 3 rings? could i not say it had 3 rings if they call me up and say 1 is now showing?

I know some people that have just bluffed the three red ring.

yeh i think im tempted to, will just phone them up and say its been doing it intermittently or is it a thing which once its happened once its never going to work again?cheers for your help so far!

1 red light is usually an E74 Graphics card error, (its overheated and either popped the dodgy solder joints, or the silicon has fried a bit...)

What is the MFR date on the back of your console?
suspended#9
the date is 29-11-2007

i'd recommend ringing MS and telling them you have 3 red lights. tell the truth it'll cost you £60+ lie and should get it done for free

most do what fwibble said and get away with it.. its free to send and they pick it up so you dont lose anything if they send it back unfixed.

From the MFR date, do you know when you actually bought it?? or is that why you know its only 2 weeks out of its year warranty? (bought it feb 08?)

i bought it at the end of Jan 08 so i know its just finished got it when my student loan came in, i probably will say it is a red ring of death job, do you know if it is a once its happened your xbox is dead or does it occasionally work again?

1 red lights can be intermittant yes, tends to be when cold to be honnest..

once they are warm it will work for days, but will happen again unless you get it propperly reflowed. (I have access to a propper reflowing machine at Hewlett Packard)

Send it in m8, say its got 3 red lights.

even when the console it out of warranty they'll fix the ring of death for free.

They've recognised the fault of their doing and have repaired both my console and my cousin's (both of which were out of warranty) for free.

cool, so you think im best just phoning and saying ive got rrod, will say i havent tried it for a few days since it happened and am quite annoyed as the original warranty is out, but luckily the extended one covers me! good timing too in all honest as my dissertation is in next month!!, is there anything i can do to maybe temporarily fix it?

just say that it red rings (3 red lights) when you were playing it, it was ok a couple of days later but now its got em again.

SO IT SEEMS INTERMITTANT!! that will cover you.

they will fix one if over the 1 year warranty not one that is "out of warranty" like you say.. as the only problem they fix past the 1 year standard warranty is the 3 red light issues as like you also say, they have recognised that this issue is their fault so have extended the warranty on that issue alone, to 3 years from purchase date.

you don't even need to phone, a repair can be arranged fron the xbox website.

Silly question..

Have you tried wiggling the video cable at the back of the machine? Sometimes they work themselves loose.

I get the 1 light with the e74 error quite often and all that needs doing is to take the video plug out and replug it making sure its in square. Solves it everytime.

But if you've done that then ignore what I've just said :-)

Edit: Also - I'd advise against the Towel method - totally warps the inside and rather than fixing the solder joints at the CPU and GPU it affect ALL solder in the board.... So try it at your own risk...

yeh i have taken out all the cables many times and left it for a few hours retried it bout 10 mins ago and it still came up, think im going to say the rrod keeps happening intermittently and go from there, cheers all for your help! will let you know how i get on....if you care haha

Oke doke, worth a shot lol.

For what its worth - fixing 1RROD and 3RROD can be done in about 30mins with a £5 (or cheaper) kit from ebay. I've done many with these and had quite a high success rate. They come with guides too on how to fix them.

I'm contemplating experimenting on my next RROD machine with the new heatsink revision they brought out and replace the old heatsink with the new revision.

thanks for the advice on fixing it but i'd rather just send it in, im clumsy and would def break it more!!

If you are successful in getting MS to attempt repair I would ask them to email you a shipping label as it's quickest.

You then take off everything but the faceplate (any you don't may not get returned) and tape it up in a spare box (not the original). Stick the address label from the email on it and ring the courier for pick-up.

Just the steps you take to get it repaired. I was told by MS to remove all cables, HDD and stuff and put it in another box (not the 360 one) for shipping. I only found out later that you could ask for an emailed courier label to stick yourself before ringing the company (UPS I think) to come pick it up on MS's behalf.
