xbox 360 or PS3?

I thought this would be a more unbiased place to ask this question instead of a games website.

I recently did the http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86060 "buy cheap PS3 games and trade in for twice as much store credit" thing, and have now got a £280 gamestation voucher.

But I can't make up my mind what to get. I already have a wii and I used to play more mature games on my PC, but I haven't really done that for months as I use my computer more for work now and would like to keep it that way.

I think the current gen of consoles easily compare with (or better) PC games - shame about the keyboard and mouse though - so I think that's what I'll spend my voucher on. But what to get???

The price doesn't really come into it too much (but obviously gives the xbox a few bonus points) they are quite similarly priced if you rule out the xbox core pack. I could go for the new "elite" xbox, but then the price is even closer, and it seems like a large premium for a bigger harddrive and HDMI. I know it's only £30 more, but considering the package deals that gamestation do and second-hand prices it works out a lot more.

btw, I have a HD plasma with HDMI/component/VGA etc, so am looking forward to some good HD graphics. :)

anyway, this is my thinking:

xbox 360 pros
1. Big games catalogue, (will take it home and have fun with straight away)
2. "Killer apps" (such as gears of war)
3. Cheap games
4. live service
5. bit cheaper
xbox 360 cons
1. Looks poo, elite or not (my opinion)
2. "ring of death" (elite apparently fixes this though, if I pay the extra)
3. no HD media drive built in (the addon will add to the cost and make the whole system look even more poo - plus blueray will prob win the "format war".

PS3 pros
1. Would look lovely under my TV
2. Future investment?? more powerfull??? ... Don't know about this really, it might end up plummetting in price and the PS3 may never be able to better the 360's larger graphics memory.
3. Built in blueray :-D
4. Errr... It costs more, so it'll be errr... better. ...Won't it?
PS3 cons
1. **** current games catalogue (nothing inspires me too much atm - maybe resistance and darkness, but darkness is cross format anyway.
2. comparisons of dual format games so far seem to favour the 360
3. Repeated for importance: **** current games.

I'm kind of leaning towards the 360 at the moment, but there's a little voice saying "are you crazy?? You could be getting a PS3!! it's obviously going to be superior!! ...And has built in blueray!"

What do you guys think?

I went for an xbox 360 elite in the end.

Do you want a blu ray player? Or a games console?

That's pretty much the question as it is at the minute.

In my opinion you should get both. Get the 360 now. Then get the PS3, when the price drops, its games cat gets bigger, and it actually sells for being a games console.
#2
360, its cheaper and most of the games coming out on the ps3 are coming out on the 360

I may get a ps3 when the price drops,
#3
Wait till next Monday if you want the 360 with expected prices drops upon release of the 360 Elite. :) PS3 is good, but as freeDUMB says, look to getting a PS3 in the future for Blu-Ray and large titles.
#4
I would say 360 as a games console is for playing now, not waiting a year for some good games to come out. The video marketplace should be coming to the UK by xmas supposivly so you wont need to buy an hd dvd player as you can just rent all of the hd movies and buy the hd episodes etc.
#5
there are alot of ps3 games coming out september onwards like warhawk and blacksite 51. i have a ps3 and im very happy with it. im not saying 360 is a bad console it is quiet good as it has alot of games but it has been out longer than ps3. many people agree that ps3 will be better later on so it depends if you want to get 360 now then ps3 later or just get ps3 to keep.

For the games alone, 360 wins hands down. Live is great. I also have two brothers who have 360, PS3 and Wii and mainly use the 360, PS3 being their least popular choice.

I would love to have both, Theres something special about the PS3. Ive got a xbox 360.

Everyone is saying the 360 or the elite. I'll be first to say Playstation 3 because it has a Blue-Ray Drive meaning you don't need to buy a Blue Ray player later. ANother thing you haven't mentioned is the Ps3 has bluetooth and Bluetooth controllers even though that doesn't make much difference compared with Xbox 360's wireless controllers but it's still an advantage.

With the 60GB version:
The Ps3 has WI-FI built in so you don't need to buy an external one like the Xbox 360 and also memory card readers.

TBH I don't know because in North America they have the 80 GB version so you might aswell wait for that but SCEE hasn't announced they could be releasing one for Europe so there no point waiting either. Or you could do a couple of hacks and put a bigger hard drive inside the PS3 so it's more than the 360 Elite.
#9
oh yh also the problems with 360. i know there is that extra warranty for the red light problem but some people have had to send theres in 3 times. ps3s build quality is really good. just watch smash my ps3 v 360 v wii. i know that is a silly way to compare but you would want a console which works and you wouldnt want to be worried about your 360 breaking down on you everytime you play.

The PS3's life is supposed to be 10 years then the PS4 might come out. So I'd go for the 360 now, better games, more games, games out on both consoles are generally better on the 360 and of course live

i wouldnt totally agree with that. more games yes but there not better. rainbow six vegas is better on the ps3. many companys are going to bluray as you cant really put much on a single dvd which is what the 360 supports.
playstation network is free and it is great. my freind has 360 and i cant really tell the difference when playing online. and he pays for live when i get it for free.

Lol fanboyism(not you) I know 6 friends out of 10 with PS3's who have taken them back whereas only 3 out of 20 with 360's.

Its just pot luck the PS3 hasnt been out long enough to claim its better made.

I still say its fanboyism, im not saying 360s arent badly made im saying the ps3s arent fantastic made.

My friends watch a lot of blu ray movies so maybe thats why.

Funny how all the people who were so protective of Sony during the shoddy ps1 and ps2 productions now jump on MS for doing the same forgetting about Sonys problems in the past.

Xbox 360 is better because
1) Gaming it has more exclusives them the PS3 like

GTA 4 exclusive content Microsoft paid 5 Million dollars for
Gears of War
Halo 3

Look:
Recently there was a game out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 called Madden 08
Made by EA

There was a complaint that it runs faster on Xbox 360
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2477&Itemid=39

EA said that its harder to devlop for the PS3 there

WILL NOT be that many games comapred to Xbox 360

There are so many good games on xbox 360

also nothing beats XBOX L!VE

My freind brought an PS3 sold it 1 week after for XBox 360

Why do you think so many people are ALREADY selling there PS3?

Trust me Xbox 360
Microsoft have got alot planned for consumers do you watch the Microsoft E3?

Also
it comes with 3 years warrenty so there is nothing to worry about
And
Microsoft new hardware does not fail

Yeah i have to say i was worred as my xbox 360 was going out of the 1 year warrenty but now MICROSOFT have extended to 3 years of free
THATS ALL XBOX 360'S

also th new Xbox 360 have newer hardware which are better

ALICOM007
then why does microsoft recieve 1500 xbox 360s a day because of hardware faults. your freinds must be really unlucky but the last time i checked ps3 failure rate is 1%.

Fanboy!

You cannot say the failure rate BECAUSE it has not been out as long as XBox 360

ALSO

Microsoft had given 3 YEAR WARRENTY
AT LEAST
MICROSOFT HAVE admitted the problem

therefore CHANGED the hardware

If you are worried about getting the 3 red rings then wait until the newer model comes out with the smaller cooler chips. But check this page for comparisons: http://uk.gamespot.com/features/6162742/p-2.html . As h4x3r said, the new madden which I don't think you'll play, runs at 30 frames per second on the ps3 and still has slowdown. I'd expect problems like this to happen for a while yet as games are designed for the 360 and ported over to the ps3.
#20
havn't there been a few problems with the PS3s drive breaking not taking in the discs

Yeah i know

But people need to understand if the failure rate is 1% what are there comparing it to? Xbox 360? They cant do that because the xbox 360 has been in the market for more then a year

Do you want a blu ray player? Or a games console?
...Yes, that pretty much sums up the current stuation I suppose.

Theres something special about the PS3
...Yes. AS ALICOM007 pointed out, it's a very well built peice of kit, and it certainly looks the business. Quiet running too. It just "looks" like the quality choice and the OS is super-smooth too. A joy in it's own right.

But on the other hand, the gamesplayer in me wants the 360. And the AV fan wants the PS3. I suppose it depends which side to listen to.

I have a feeling I would be hiding the 360 away somewhere, where as the PS3 would proudly and gracefully dominate the space under the telly! Any "hardcore gamer" may dissaprove of that statement but the AV heads will know where I am coming from.

But to be honest, it's hard to ignore the fact I could have more fun with the 360 at the moment. I still can't bloody decide though!!!

Thats wrong
Why would you hide it? Get it in black?

Look its a gaming machine
Xbox 360 has THE best games in the market and will carry on that way

XBox 360 has Halo 3 never heard of it? Read this from america news:
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/prnewswire/AQTH04009082007-1.htm

You can its a better bulit machine yes? What do you base that on?

Where as the xbox 360 has been out for 1 year and now comes with 3 YEAR MICROSOFT WARRENTY

If you want somthing black get the Elite.

Dont make the mistake and not buying the Xbox 360

Btw get a proper Blue Ray player if you need one

I didn't read the page 2 posts when writing my last reply! I've got to admit, I feel like it's going to be the xbox 360 now (if at least, just to play gears of war). And maybe a PS3 later on.

Question is... premium now, or elite later? (is it next monday did someone say? ...As in the 27th?? Doh, I wasn't planning on waiting that long!

Most definatly. From reading this I don't understand how you can compare a console which has been out over a year to something released not so long ago. I've played both, never really looked at statistics or anything like that, knew the 360 has a better range of games, in the future and at the moment.

Also, from what my mate said, it sounds like your better off purchasing the 120GB HD seperatly because there will be a lot of content when the TV thingy is released (if you know what I'm on about).

I've had my 360 since launch date and think it's the nuts. The quality of the games, particularly recent releases (Forza 2, Bioshock) is excellent.

If youre buying for gaming purposes, the 360 is where it's at, no contest.

A number of mates chopped theirs in for a PS3, and they're all reasonably happy, although still playing MotorStorm and FOM for want of anything else exclusive, but that will change in time for Xmas. Personally, the PS3's main attraction for me is the DLNA compatibility and that it's a potentially more flexible and powerful media hub than the 360, which is undermined somewhat by the 'walled garden' approach of Microsoft Media Centre.

I had the HD DVD drive but sold it, plus the few films I bought for it. Personally I didnt find the pictures that bigger leap from a quality DVD player, and they're not as crisp as Sky HD either. Blu-Ray doesnt interest me that much right now either. And yes, Ive got the tv for it - a Panasonic Series 9 42" plasma panel.

As for the Elite, I'd upgrade if the thing resolved the main 360 problem - noise. However it doesnt, so not interested. The largely pointless HDMI and bigger drive represents poor value over a Premium.

I do fancy a PS3, its an impressive piece of kit, but the price needs to drop to near £300, which it certainly will in the not too distant future. Sony's recent sales kick-start of the 'value pack" has died away already. Their only next step is a proper price cut. That, and a stronger roster of games, and I'll get on board.
#33
I have a 360 and it's great, the online play is amazing and because it's been out a while you can get some classic games at bargain prices.

I will get a PS3 in the future but not at the moment.

Also why do people think Blu-Ray has won the HD war when Paramount and Dreamworks have just announced they will be backing HD-DVD over Blu-Ray.
banned#34
The xbox 3 year warranty is not long enough, a games console should last more than 3 years and if your 360 breaks after 3 years your stuffed. I cant choose between a ps3 and 360 too but the ps3 is winning for me as most people i know with a 360 have had to get it replaced with the 3 rings thing and because of this i am most likely going to get a ps3 soon.

Prissy you on live? What games dya play?

Hi, just to qualify myself - im a games programmer for a major uk games studio producing titles for 360/PS3/PC - when it comes to the performance debate, Sony somehow managed to convince everyone the "PS3 is (a lot) more powerful than 360" - the truth is that actually they end up being relatively equally powerful overall, but 360 will probably perform better as it is easier to develop for.

PS3's CELL is has one PPU (major core) and 8 SPUs (cut-down minor cores doing optimised for doing vector processing) but what Sony doesnt make noise about is that one of these Cores is redundant for the sake of yield, they assume one will be broken, another one is permanently used by the OS and another one is intermittently used by the OS, so in reality you only have 5 SPUs. 360 has 3 major cores, each one being _much_ more powerful than a SPU.

Add into the fact the Nvidia RSX GPU on the PS3 is utter balls compared to the ATI GPU on the 360. To sum up - even though it was released ages afterwards, the PS3 wont have anything better than 360. The one advantage it does have though is Blue-Ray, next gen games require space - a DVD doesnt really cut it.. Personally I dont want Blue-Ray to do well, I'm fed up of Sony and their stupid rip off own brand memory formats like Memory Pro whatever etc.. why didnt you give up after MiniDisk, seriously?

I don't think Sony has had anything successful lately bar the Playstation 1 & 2. No format they have ever created has done well as far as I know, they have all tanked... But people get pushed into buying blueray and think they are getting a good deal

People just buy into the Sony brand because they think they are well built etc (Older people like my Auntie and Dad) Unfortunately they may of been the best in the 80's and 90's but this is 2007, and Sony have got complacent.

They held off on the Plasma and LCD market for too long, because of how well there CRTs were selling. As a result they had to buy in Samsung TVs and rebrand them. That was a major embarrassment for a Japanese company to buy from a South Korean company!

Then you got the exploding batteries and everything else that's happened recently.

My 360 has been on every day pretty much since I bought it. I play games on it (which you know, there is a vast range to choose from) and any media… I just stream from my computer. No need for blueray :? Simple :)

Anyway this comment is a waste of time really, because the fan boys got in before me…
