To connect an old style 360 wirelessly to the internet.

do you need one of them to play on live?

No. You just need to connect by any method available to the internet.

you only need them for the old xbox consoles to connect wirelessly to the internet, altneratives being the provided ethernet cable.

The new xbox slims have built in wireless.

the wireless adaptor is just a way to connect to the internet (wirelessly). There are alternatives such as a homeplug which will use the wiring in your house to bridge a connection from one plug connected with a wired connection from your modem or router, to another plug which will be wired to your xbox 360. A wireless adaptor is easier but a plain ethernet cable will give you the best connection if your console wont be too far from your internet source.

Do these have to be specific internet cables? Also cheapest xbox 360 new out there? Or preowned?
