Hi all

A friend's Xbox 360 is getting 4 flashing red lights when you turn it on and doesn't seem to read discs. After you put one in, it says "Reading" momentarily and then says "Open Tray" as though there's not even a disc in there!!

What does this mean? Dead laser? Is the whole drive dead? Or maybe the whole console is dead? >_<

Check your video cable at both the xbox and the TV/monitor. More info here.

Will pass on the link to him. He'll probably be looking to get his own console repaired first though before shelling out for a new one.

The Red light problem could possibly be down to that. He loaded it up for me and on the first 2 or 3 occassions it loaded up the dash fine but then didn't recognise the disc and then after that it just gave the 4 lights. Strnage indeed. I susepct the whole console is probably knackered

All four lights on the Ring of Light (ROL) flash red on the front of your Xbox 360 console.

The following indicator is displayed on the front panel of your Xbox 360 console and flashes on and off:

CAUSEThis issue may occur for one of the following reasons: The audio-visual (AV) cab...This issue may occur for one of the following reasons:
The audio-visual (AV) cable is not connected correctly or is not plugged in to your Xbox 360 console.
The console is not detecting the cable.
This issue does not occur if the AV cable is plugged incorrectly into a television, a stereo, or a VCR.

Note This issue occurs only on Xbox 360 consoles that do not have a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) AV port.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I have a development..

I think he's replaced the laser and now rather than just saying "open tray" it's now saying "to play this game put it in a xbox 360" or something weird like that? Very very confusing!

How much did it cost to replace the laser????

Sorry, I was mistaken in saying he replaced the laser. He replaced the whole drive.

Problem now is that the new drive doesn't have the right drive key. He's taking it to someone for that, doesn't have the tools to diy.

Im sure that another drive cannot work with a different motherboard

it can if you spoof the key from the old one

you need the old drive, read that firmware, then flash the new drive with the key, serial and ident strings from the original one (spoofing the new one with the old ones details)

Without the info off the old drive, the whole console is a bin item
