My XBox is displaying the dreaded RROD which has taken me by surprise.

The unit was purchased in May 2008 so, I believe, uses a newer chipset (Jasper?) which shouldn't have the RROD problem.

I'm a casual gamer but for the last couple of months have been using the unit regularly (daily) for no more than a couple of hours at a time.

I last used the unit at the weekend so was surprised to see the RROD.

I've followed troubleshooting tips from the internet without any luck and thought I'd ask on here before placing a call to MS.

Anyone else have an XBox of a similar age which has also experienced the RROD?

What did you do to resolve?

You are lucky ms give a 3 year period where they will fix for free if not been modified and as it was purchased in may 2008 the period will run out next month. If you phone ms they will repair it for free :)

There is no chipset in 360 which stops RROD.. start a repair request if still in 3 years or buy another if not.

Jaspers are not immune to RROD, mines lasted 9 days when it happened, took it back to Argos for replacement, also should still be in the 36 months RROD warranty, provided you still have the receipt or from the manufacture date on the back of the machine

As these guys have said, XBOX Warranty repair is your only course of action. I tried repairing a number of RROD xbox's and even wrote a couple of guides on it, but after X amount of time the RROD always comes back.

Also if you open it up and attempt the repair you invalidate your warranty.

Thanks guys.

I suspected it would be a call in to MS and prayed that my unit was still within the 3yr period.

Just wanted to check if Jasper chipset units also did this as I remember getting the impression, when they were released, that they didn't.

Out of interest, anyone know what MS actually do to repair the unit?

Do it online.

If they can repair they repair, usually they replace the mobo or give you a refurbished unit.

Hmm, I really don't want a refurbished unit as mine is as new.

I think it still comes with warranty as though new

Yeah, but I know the history of my unit and that it has been well looked after.

I hate it when manufacturers do this.
#10
Hey it could be worse, at least they fix it and send you a working console.

Try that with a YLOD on the PS3 and you have no chance.

They come back as new. Not sure what other option you have, had 3 refurbished units (different boxes) Never had one failed since to my knowledge.

They don't send you back damaged goods well I never had one. Heard one person did, but they got a new unit after complaining.

Fair point.

Am I correct in assuuming that, once repaired, it could happen again?

BTW, just checked and the manufacture date is August 2007 so perhaps my unit doesn't have a Jasper chipset.

This is how you tell.

Technically it could but it is unlikely to.

THink though if you have had it since Aug 2007 your outside the warranty date too :( bad times

Not really still try it, I had one dated 2006 still registered.

Thanks Adam.

My label says 16.5A. So, not a Jasper?

dm - unit was made in August 2007 but purchased (Argos) in May 2008 so should still be covered.

You need to do it online, there's no way they can tell you when it was bought.

No it's not a Jaspser, could be a Falcon/Zephyr

op do you have your receipt ?

Yes - bit 'old skool' like that.

I tend to look after my stuff and keep all the associated docs.

Just raised a ticket with MS.

Very helpful chap - awaiting an email from him so I can reply with a copy of my receipt to confirm the unit is still within warranty.

Why? You have no reason to, just register it online and start a claim for RROD.

Tried that but was un-able to progress as MS systems claim the warranty expired in December 2008?!?

In these scenarios, where you believe it is still under warranty (and can prove it), they advise calling them.

Yeh it would of expired in 2008 as your claiming the wrong thing. There's a tab that says 3 year warranty RROD.
#23
Ah, didn't see that tab.

No bother - the chap at MS was cool about it.

Have emailed him my proof of purchase so just waiting on him to progress.

Talk about lucky - one month of warranty claim left.

Anyone know how much MS would have charged for an out of warranty repair?

Used to be around £60.

Thought I would close off this thread to say I received my 'repaired' console back yesterday.

Pretty swift service but it's obvious this another console as, when my console arrived at the Microsoft repair facility, I received an email advising me of this.

Within the hour, I received another email advising me that it had been 'repaired' and shipped back to me.

I'm thinking it's un-likely they could have turned the repair around so quickly.

Microsoft have replaced the id tag on the rear of the unit with a new one as it now has an entry for service date (the date the unit was 'repaired') instead of manufactured date. The serial number is the same but the product id is different.

I also had to update the dashboard software when I logged into my Live account and re-install games on my HDD as, the message said, they were associated with a different console.

At least the actual unit appears to be in good condition and I just hope it doesn't RROD again.

Perhaps I should think about selling/trading it for an XBox Slim.
